Command Strips vs Nails
Adhesive leaves no hole and sometimes takes paint. A nail always leaves a hole and never takes paint. Which is worse depends entirely on your wall and your lease.
By Janet H. · Published

Use adhesive strips on smooth painted drywall for anything inside the rating — 3M puts Command Large Picture Hanging Strips at 4 lb per set and 16 lb per frame using four pairs. Use a nail or a drywall hook above that, or on any surface adhesive is not rated for.
The hidden cost of adhesive is that it occasionally lifts paint on removal, and the hidden cost of a nail is that it never does. A filled pin hole is invisible after a coat of touch-up paint; a strip of missing paint is not.

Head to head
| Command strips | Nail or picture hook | |
|---|---|---|
| Published capacity | 1 lb to 4 lb per set by size; up to 16 lb per frame with four Large pairs | Depends on the fixing and the wall, not on a single rating |
| Hole in the wall | None | Yes — from a pin hole upward |
| Risk to paint | Real: can lift paint if removed wrongly or used on uncured paint | None |
| Surfaces | Painted drywall, finished wood, tile, metal, glass — smooth only | Drywall, plaster, wood; masonry with the right fixing |
| Textured walls | Excluded — adhesive contacts only the high points | Fine |
| Wallpaper | Excluded — the adhesive bonds to the paper, not the wall | Fine, with care |
| Reposition after mounting | No — the bond is one attempt | Yes, at the cost of a second hole |
| Removal | Stretch-release tab, straight down, slowly | Pull the nail, fill, touch up |
| Cost per fixing | Higher | Pennies |
The three walls where adhesive is simply out
These are not marginal cases. On any of the three, a correctly rated strip will fail, and it will fail by letting go rather than by holding badly.
Textured walls. Orange peel, knockdown and popcorn finishes give adhesive contact only at the high points, which is a fraction of the stated bonding area. Full detail in hanging on textured walls.
Wallpaper. The strip bonds to the paper. The paper is attached to the wall with paste that was never rated for a hanging load, so the failure takes the wallpaper with it. Hanging on wallpaper covers the alternatives.
Unsealed or bare surfaces. Raw plaster, unpainted drywall, brick and unsealed concrete are porous. Adhesive needs a sealed, smooth face. Brick and concrete each have their own method.
Where the weight limit actually bites
Most picture frames are lighter than people assume, and the glazing is nearly all of the weight. A 24x36 poster frame with acrylic glazing is comfortably inside adhesive territory; the same frame glazed in glass may not be. That is the single number worth checking before you choose a method — acrylic versus glass glazing has the comparison.
Published Command ratings run from 1 lb per set for the Small strips to 4 lb per set for the Large, and 3M states a 16 lb maximum per frame using four Large pairs. How much weight Command strips hold lists every size.
Past that figure, a nail into a stud or a purpose-made drywall hook is the honest answer. The OOK Monkey Hook is rated 35 lb on 1/2 inch residential drywall and 50 lb on 5/8 inch commercial drywall, goes in by hand with no tools, and leaves one pin-sized hole. For mirrors and genuinely heavy pieces, the Hillman no-stud hanger is rated at 200 lb — see hanging a heavy mirror without drilling.
Removing each one without damage
Strips. Find the tab, hold the frame or hook against the wall with one hand, and pull the tab slowly straight down along the wall — not outward. The adhesive is designed to stretch and release, and pulling outward is what tears paint. Slowly means slowly: ten to fifteen seconds of steady pull, not a yank. Removing adhesive strips without damage covers what to do when the tab breaks or hides.
Nails. Pull with pliers or the claw of a hammer, protecting the wall with a thin piece of card so the tool does not dent the surface. Fill with lightweight spackle, let it dry, sand flush, and touch up with the wall paint. Ten minutes and the hole is gone.
The practical verdict
On smooth painted drywall, under the rated weight, with paint that has had time to cure: strips. They are quicker, they need no tools, they require no measuring of hook positions, and there is nothing to fill.
Everywhere else: a fixing that goes into the wall. That includes textured and papered walls, anything over the rating, anything you expect to reposition, and any wall where you cannot be certain the paint is sound. A pin-sized hole is a known, fixable quantity. Hanging pictures without nails ranks every no-nail method by capacity if you want to exhaust those options first.

Common questions
Are Command strips better than nails?
On smooth painted drywall, within the published weight rating, and on paint that has cured, yes — they leave no hole and come off with a stretch-release tab. Outside those conditions a nail or drywall hook is better, because adhesive on textured, papered or unsealed walls will fail by letting go.
How much weight can Command strips hold compared to a nail?
3M rates Command picture-hanging strips from 1 lb per set for the Small size up to 4 lb per set for the Large, with a stated maximum of 16 lb per frame using four Large pairs. A nail has no single rating because capacity depends on the fixing and the wall, but a purpose-made drywall hook such as the OOK Monkey Hook is rated 35 lb on 1/2 inch residential drywall.
Do Command strips damage paint?
They can, and the two common causes are both avoidable. Removing the strip by pulling outward rather than straight down along the wall tears the paint, and applying one to paint that has not cured bonds the adhesive more strongly to the paint than the paint is bonded to the wall. 3M advises letting new paint cure for a week first.
Is a nail hole worse than a missing patch of paint?
Usually the opposite. A few pin holes filled with lightweight spackle, sanded flush and touched up are invisible and are treated as normal wear in most rentals. A patch of paint pulled off the wall needs a repaint of the affected area to disappear.
Can you use Command strips on a textured wall?
No. Orange peel, knockdown and popcorn finishes mean the adhesive only contacts the high points of the texture, which is a small fraction of the bonding area the rating assumes. The strip will either fail immediately or let go weeks later; a fixing that penetrates the wall is the correct choice there.
