Hanging Pictures Without Studs
Hunting for a stud is the wrong first move. Hollow drywall holds far more than people expect, and the stud is almost never where the picture wants to go.
By Janet H. · Published

For anything under about 16 lb, use adhesive strips and forget the stud entirely. For 16 to 50 lb, a small-hole drywall hook rated 35 lb holds in hollow board. Above that, a no-stud plate hanger rated 200 lb does. None of those needs a stud, and all of them are rated by the manufacturer.
Studs sit at 16 or 24 inch centers, so the chance one lands where your picture should hang is low. Moving the picture to suit the framing is the wrong way round — though on a wide frame, two hooks at 16 inch spacing gives you a chance of catching both studs for free.

The weight ladder, with published ratings
Weigh the frame on kitchen scales. It is the only number that matters, and it is almost always lower than people guess — a plexiglass-glazed 16x20 frame is usually under 4 lb.
| Frame weight | Fixing | Published rating | Wall damage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 1 lb | Small picture hanging strips | 1 lb per set | None |
| 1 - 16 lb | Large picture hanging strips, up to four sets | 4 lb per set; 16 lb per frame | None |
| Up to 7.5 lb on one point | Jumbo adhesive hook | 7.5 lb | None |
| 16 - 35 lb | Small-hole drywall hook | 35 lb on 1/2 in drywall; 50 lb on 5/8 in | One pin-sized hole |
| 35 - 70 lb | Two small-hole drywall hooks spaced apart | 35 lb each — stay well under the combined figure | Two pin-sized holes |
| Over 70 lb | No-stud plate hanger | 200 lb (manufacturer rating) | Several filler-sized pin holes |
Two fixings, spread wide, beats one strong one
A 40 lb mirror on one 35 lb hook is over the rating. The same mirror on two hooks spaced across its width puts roughly 20 lb on each, with a large margin, and it cannot rotate.
Spacing matters as much as count. Put the two fixings as far apart as the frame hardware allows — wide spacing resists twisting, narrow spacing does not, and twisting is what works a fixing loose over months.
What does not work in hollow board
The failures here are specific, and all three are common.
- A plain nail or screw straight into drywall. It holds for a while and then pulls through, taking a chunk of board with it. The hole it leaves is far bigger than the hole a rated hook leaves.
- Expanding plastic anchors for picture weights. They work, but they leave a quarter-inch hole that needs filling and sanding. For a picture, a hook that leaves a pin hole is both stronger and tidier.
- Small-hole hooks on anything that is not hollow drywall. They need a cavity behind the board. Plaster over lath, plaster over masonry and solid concrete all defeat them — concrete and brick need their own methods.
Tap the wall before deciding. A hollow sound and a slight give is drywall. A dead thud with no give is plaster over something solid, and the whole ladder above changes.
When you genuinely do want the stud
Two cases. A full-length mirror, which is heavy and bears against the wall at the bottom. And anything with a cantilever — a shelf, a swing-arm, a TV mount. Those apply a lever to the fixing rather than a straight downward pull, and a lever is what hollow board handles worst.
For a heavy mirror hung flat, a no-stud plate hanger rated 200 lb or an interlocking cleat is the no-stud route: hanging a heavy mirror. For a cantilevered load, find the stud — that is the one place the search is worth doing.

Common questions
Can you hang a picture without finding a stud?
Almost always. Adhesive picture hanging strips carry up to 16 lb per frame using four sets, a small-hole drywall hook is rated 35 lb on half-inch drywall, and a no-stud plate hanger is rated 200 lb. Studs sit at 16 or 24 inch centers, so one rarely lands where the picture should go anyway.
How much weight can drywall hold without a stud?
More than most people expect. The published figures are 16 lb per frame for four sets of Command Large Picture Hanging Strips, 35 lb for a Monkey Hook on half-inch drywall and 50 lb on five-eighths inch board, and 200 lb for the Hillman no-stud plate hanger. Treat each as a ceiling and derate.
Why does a nail pull out of drywall?
Because a plain nail relies on friction in a soft gypsum panel, and gypsum crumbles under a sustained load. A small-hole hook passes through the board and grips the back face instead, so the load is carried in shear across the full panel thickness — which is why it holds 35 lb from a pin-sized hole.
Is it better to use one strong fixing or two?
Two, spaced as far apart as the frame hardware allows. Two 35 lb hooks under a 40 lb mirror put about 20 lb on each with a large margin, and wide spacing stops the frame twisting. Twisting is what works a fixing loose over months, not static weight.
When do you actually need a stud?
For a full-length mirror, and for anything cantilevered — a shelf, a swing-arm, a television mount. Those apply a lever to the fixing rather than a straight downward pull, and leverage is what hollow board handles worst. A picture hanging flat against the wall is not one of those cases.
