Adhesive Hooks vs Adhesive Strips
They share the same adhesive and solve different problems. What decides it is the back of your frame, not the weight of it.
By Janet H. · Published

Use a hook if the frame has a sawtooth or a wire on the back. Use strips if it has nothing on the back, or if you want it to sit flush. That one check answers it for almost every frame, before weight comes into it at all.
The practical trade-off: a hook leaves the frame liftable and straightenable forever. A set of strips locks it in position and is consumed when you take it down.

The four axes that actually differ
| Adhesive hooks | Adhesive picture strips | |
|---|---|---|
| Rated weight (3M published) | 3 lb medium, 5 lb large, 7.5 lb jumbo per hook | 4 lb per set (Large); up to 16 lb per frame using four sets |
| What the frame needs | A sawtooth hanger or a wire on the back | Nothing — the strips bond to the frame itself |
| How it sits | A few millimeters proud; the frame hangs off the hook | Flush to the wall — the strips interlock thin |
| Straightening it later | Easy — lift and nudge, as often as you like | Difficult; the interlock resists small adjustments |
| Taking it down | The frame lifts off; the hook stays and is reusable | Removal consumes the strips |
| Where it wins | Frames with hardware, anything you will adjust, heavier single points | Flat-backed frames, flush mounting, gallery walls that must stay put |
Reading the weight ratings honestly
The two ratings are not directly comparable, which is where most of the confusion comes from.
A hook rating is per hook, and a frame hangs from one hook, so the rating is the ceiling. 3M publishes 3 lb for the Medium wall hook, 5 lb for the Large and 7.5 lb for the Jumbo — so a single adhesive hook tops out at 7.5 lb.
A strip rating is per set, and 3M allows multiple sets on one frame. Large Picture Hanging Strips are rated 4 lb per set, with up to four sets on a frame for 16 lb total. That is why strips reach meaningfully higher than hooks: you can add more of them to the same object.
| Frame weight | Use | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Under 1 lb | One small strip set, or a small hook | Either works; use two fixings so it cannot rotate |
| 1 - 5 lb | A Large hook, or two Large strip sets | Hook if it has hardware, strips if it is flat-backed |
| 5 - 7.5 lb | A Jumbo hook, or three Large strip sets | This is the ceiling for a single hook |
| 7.5 - 16 lb | Four Large strip sets | Above a single hook's rating; strips scale, hooks do not |
| Over 16 lb | Neither — use a small-hole drywall hook | Past 3M's published per-frame maximum |
On a gallery wall, strips win
A gallery wall is the one case where the flush mounting matters. Frames hung off hooks sit a few millimeters proud and each one tilts slightly differently, which reads as untidiness across a wall of eight frames even though no single frame looks wrong.
Strips hold every frame flat against the wall at the same depth, which is what makes a grid read as one object. The cost is that nudging one frame later is awkward — so lay the arrangement out properly before anything is stuck. Hanging a gallery wall without nails and the layout templates.
Both fail on the same surfaces
Choosing between them is pointless if the wall rules out adhesive altogether, and the exclusions are identical because the adhesive is the same.
3M specifies that Command products stick to painted, stained or varnished wood, tile, painted cinder block, plaster, metal and wallboard, and that they are intended for smooth surfaces. They are not recommended for brick, textured walls, wallpaper or rough and porous surfaces. 3M also advises waiting until paint has fully cured — it recommends a week — before sticking anything to it.
For the walls that fail that test: textured walls, brick, wallpaper and concrete each have their own answer, and none of them is a stronger adhesive.
The verdict
Strips for flat-backed frames, flush mounting and gallery walls that need to stay exactly where you put them. They reach higher weights because you can use four sets on one frame.
Hooks for frames that already have a sawtooth or a wire, for anything you will straighten or swap, and for objects that are not frames at all. The hook survives removal and can be re-stuck with refill strips, which makes it the cheaper fixing over time.
Neither above 16 lb, or on a surface 3M excludes. A small-hole drywall hook rated 35 lb leaves a pin-sized hole and is the honest answer there.
Which of the two you can use often comes down to the fitting on the back of the frame. Sawtooth hanger versus picture wire covers what each fitting does and which adhesive hanger matches it.

Common questions
Should I use Command hooks or Command strips for pictures?
Check the back of the frame. If it has a sawtooth hanger or a wire, use a hook — it stays adjustable and survives removal. If the back is flat with no hardware, use picture hanging strips, which bond to the frame itself and mount it flush to the wall.
Which holds more weight, a Command hook or Command strips?
Strips, because you can use several sets on one frame. 3M rates a Large hook at 5 lb and a Jumbo at 7.5 lb, and a frame hangs from a single hook. Large Picture Hanging Strips are rated 4 lb per set with up to four sets per frame, for 16 lb total.
Do Command strips make a picture sit flat against the wall?
Yes — the two strips interlock thin, so the frame sits flush. A hook holds the frame a few millimeters proud and lets it tilt slightly, which is barely visible on one frame and clearly visible across a wall of eight.
Can you straighten a picture after using Command strips?
Not easily. The interlock resists small adjustments, which is the trade-off for the flush mounting. If you expect to nudge the frame, use a hook instead — the frame lifts off and goes back as often as you like.
Do adhesive hooks and strips work on the same walls?
Yes, because the adhesive is the same, and so are the exclusions. 3M specifies painted, stained or varnished wood, tile, painted cinder block, plaster, metal and wallboard, and says the products are intended for smooth surfaces. Brick, textured walls, wallpaper and rough or porous surfaces are not recommended for either.
