Measure the poster first. A surprising share of commercial posters are not 24x36, and the frame will not tell you until it arrives.

Measure the poster before you order anything, then buy acrylic glazing rather than glass. At 24x36 a glass-fronted frame frequently exceeds the 16 lb ceiling for adhesive strips, and acrylic at the same size roughly halves it.
The measuring step matters more here than anywhere else on the site: 18x24, 24x36, 22.375x34 and 27x40 are all standard, all common, and all mutually incompatible.

Why acrylic, at this size
Glass at 24x36 is heavy enough to matter in three separate ways:
- Hanging. Frequently over the 16 lb adhesive ceiling, which forces a hook into the wall. The weight ladder.
- Safety. A 24x36 sheet of glass falling from head height is a genuine hazard, particularly above a bed or a sofa.
- Flex. Large glass panels are rigid, which sounds good until the frame is slightly out of square and the glass cracks rather than flexing.
The cost of acrylic is scratch resistance: it marks more easily and must be cleaned with a soft cloth, never a paper towel, and never with an ammonia-based cleaner. The full comparison.
Matted or not
Most posters are hung unmatted, filling the frame. That is the correct treatment for a poster that is meant to read as a poster — a film one-sheet, a gig poster, a typographic print.
Mat it when you want it to read as art rather than as a poster. A 24x36 poster in a 30x42 frame with a 3 inch border stops looking like a dorm-room object and starts looking like a framed piece, and that transformation costs far less than replacing the artwork. The mat sizing chart.
The frameless options

What are the standard poster frame sizes?
18x24 and 24x36 are the two most common, with 11x17 for small posters and 27x40 for the modern movie one-sheet. Two exceptions catch people out: pre-1980s one-sheets were 27x41, and many commercial posters are printed at 22.375x34 rather than 24x36.
What size frame do I need for a 24x36 poster?
