Best Command Strips for Pictures
3M makes eight products for hanging pictures and the packaging does not tell you which is which. Here is the whole range, rated and matched to frames.

For a framed picture, Command Large Picture Hanging Strips (product 17206) are the right default: 4 lb per set, 16 lb per frame with four sets. For an unframed poster, Poster Strips (17204). For a frame with a wire back, the Sticky Nail Wire-Back Hanger (17048) at 8 lb.
The range is confusing because 3M sells hooks, strips, hangers and value packs that all look similar and hold wildly different weights. This page maps the whole lot.

The two sticky-nail hangers are the range’s least-known products and often the right answer: they give you a hook with an adhesive base, so a frame that already has a wire or a sawtooth fitting hangs the normal way without a nail. The wire-back version at 8 lb is the highest-rated single adhesive fixing 3M lists for pictures.
Matching the product to your frame's back
Look at the back of the frame before you buy anything. It decides the product more than the weight does:
- Flat back, no fittings — picture hanging strips. The strips go on the frame and the frame goes on the wall.
- Sawtooth hanger — the Sawtooth Sticky Nail Hanger at 5 lb, or strips if you prefer the frame flat against the wall.
- Hanging wire across the back — the Sticky Nail Wire-Back Hanger at 8 lb. Strips will not work; the wire holds the frame away from the wall and the strips have nothing to bond to.
- Keyhole slots — an adhesive hook, so the slot can drop over it. The hook roundup covers which one.
Why they fail, in order of frequency
- The wall was not cleaned with isopropyl alcohol. Household cleaners leave a film. This is the single most common cause and the easiest to avoid.
- The frame went back up inside the hour. The adhesive needs about an hour to reach full strength.
- The wall-side strips were never pressed directly. You have to take the frame back off and press each wall strip for 30 seconds on its own.
- The wall is textured, papered or newly painted. No rating applies on a surface the adhesive cannot bond to. Alternatives here.
- The frame is over the rating. Least common, despite being what everybody assumes.

When a Command strip is the wrong product entirely
Above 16 lb, nothing in the Command range is rated to hold a picture. That is not a criticism of the product — it is the honest ceiling of adhesive on painted drywall. At that point use a small-hole drywall hook, or for a wall full of frames, a picture rail.

Common questions
Which command strips work on textured walls?
None reliably. Adhesive needs a smooth surface to reach its rated bond area, and orange peel, knockdown or popcorn finishes give it only the high points. On a textured wall use a picture ledge, a picture rail or a small-hole drywall hook.
Which command strips hold heavy pictures?
Large Picture Hanging Strips at 4 lb per set, up to 16 lb per frame using four sets, are the heaviest picture strip 3M publishes. The Sticky Nail Wire-Back Hanger is rated 8 lb as a single fixing and suits frames with a hanging wire.
What is the difference between Command picture hanging strips and poster strips?
Picture hanging strips are rated 1 to 4 lb per set and interlock so a framed picture sits flat against the wall. Poster strips are rated 1 lb, sit flatter, and are designed for bare paper — they are not rated for framed pieces at any size.
Do Command strips work on painted walls?
Yes, on paint that has fully cured. Latex paint keeps curing for weeks after it stops feeling wet, so allow about a month after painting. Applied earlier, the adhesive bonds to a soft paint film and lifts it on removal.
Can Command strips hold a 24x36 poster frame?
Only if the frame is under 16 lb, which in practice means acrylic glazing rather than glass. A 24x36 frame with real glass frequently exceeds that. Weigh it first; if it is over, use a small-hole drywall hook instead.
