Best Picture Frames for Command Strips
Strips do not fail because the adhesive is bad. They fail because the frame is too heavy or its back is the wrong shape. Buy for those two things.
By Janet H. · Published

Buy a frame with plexiglass rather than glass, a flat back, and no sawtooth hanger sticking out of it. The Americanflat line meets all three at every size it sells, which makes it the default for anyone hanging on strips.
Weight is the obvious constraint and it is the one most people check. The back of the frame is the one they do not, and it causes more failures than weight does: a strip needs a flat, rigid surface to bond to, and a frame with a raised sawtooth or a kickstand in the middle of its back does not offer one.

The three specs that decide it
| Spec | What you want | Why it decides |
|---|---|---|
| Glazing | Plexiglass, acrylic or styrene - never glass above 11x14 | Glass is roughly two and a half times the weight of acrylic over the same area, which is what puts a frame past the strip rating |
| Back surface | Flat, rigid and at least as wide as the strip | Strips bond to the back, not to the molding. A hollow or ribbed back flexes and peels |
| Hardware on the back | Flush D-rings, or removable sawtooth | A raised sawtooth or a fold-out easel leg holds the frame off the wall and the strip never makes full contact |
What each size can weigh
The published strip ratings are per pair, and the per-frame maximum is not simply four times a pair. Here is the practical ceiling by frame size, assuming acrylic glazing.
| Frame size | Strips needed | Glass realistic? | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4x6, 5x7 | One pair of small strips | Yes | Weight is a non-issue at this size |
| 8x10 | One pair of medium or large | Yes | Glass is fine here |
| 11x14 | One pair of large, two with glass | Yes, with two pairs | The last size where glass is comfortable |
| 16x20 | Two pairs of large | Borderline - prefer acrylic | Acrylic turns this into an easy hang |
| 18x24 | Four pairs of large | No | Acrylic only |
| 24x36 | Four pairs of large, near the limit | No | Acrylic only, and weigh it first |
| Above 24x36 | Not with adhesive | No | Use a no-drill kit or a picture rail |
The published per-pair and per-frame figures are set out in full, and the strip roundup compares the ratings line by line.
Frame backs that work, and backs that do not
Pull up the listing photographs and look for the shot of the back. If there is no such shot, that is itself a mild warning.
- Works: a flat MDF or board back that sits flush with the molding edge. Strips bond across the full pad.
- Works: flush D-rings or recessed hardware. Nothing protrudes, so the frame lies flat.
- Fails: a raised sawtooth hanger. It holds the frame off the wall at the top, exactly where the strips need contact.
- Fails: a fold-out easel leg. Common on frames sold as “tabletop or wall”. The leg must fold completely flush, and on many frames it does not.
- Fails: a deep hollow back with the board recessed inside the molding. There is no surface at the right depth for a strip to reach.
The wall matters as much as the frame
A frame that meets all three specs will still come down off the wrong surface. Adhesive strips are rated for painted drywall, finished wood, tile, metal and glass — all of which have one thing in common: they are sealed.
Surfaces where strips fail regardless of what you hang on them:
- Freshly painted walls. Paint needs weeks to cure fully. Strips applied early pull the paint film off.
- Textured or orange-peel walls. The strip touches the high points only — what works on texture.
- Wallpaper. The strip holds; the paper does not — the wallpaper method.
- Bare brick, concrete or unsealed plaster. Porous and dusty. Brick, concrete and plaster each need a different approach.
Clean the wall with isopropyl alcohol rather than a household spray before applying anything. Household cleaners leave a residue that is exactly the problem.
If you want the lightest possible option
There are two formats that sidestep the weight question entirely, and both are worth knowing about before you buy a frame at all.
- A magnetic poster hanger. Two wood rails, no glazing, no backing board. Hangs a poster-sized piece from one adhesive hook — the hanger roundup.
- A stretched canvas. No glazing either, and no frame weight. A large canvas weighs less than a small framed print — canvas picks.
Both give up protection for the artwork. If the piece matters, a light frame with acrylic glazing is the right compromise, and that is what the picks above are.

Common questions
What picture frames work with Command strips?
Frames with plastic glazing rather than glass, a flat rigid back, and no raised sawtooth hanger or fold-out easel leg. The back is what most people overlook - strips bond to the back of the frame, so anything protruding from it holds the frame off the wall and the adhesive never makes full contact.
Can you hang a glass picture frame with Command strips?
Up to about 11x14, yes, usually with two pairs of large strips rather than one. Above that size glass adds enough weight to put the frame past what adhesive can hold, and a sheet of glass that size is a safety problem if it comes down.
Why do my Command strips keep falling off with picture frames?
Almost always one of three things: the frame is heavier than the published per-frame maximum, something on the frame back is holding it off the wall, or the wall is not a sealed surface. Freshly painted walls, texture, wallpaper and bare masonry all defeat strips regardless of the frame.
Do I need to remove the sawtooth hanger from a frame before using strips?
If it is raised, yes. It holds the top of the frame off the wall at exactly the point the strips need contact. Many sawtooth hangers are stapled rather than screwed and come off with pliers in under a minute, leaving a flat back.
How many Command strips for a 16x20 frame?
Two pairs of large strips with acrylic glazing, and four with glass. Weigh the frame on a kitchen scale first and check it against the published per-frame maximum rather than the per-pair rating, because listing weights often describe the shipping carton.
