Finishing a plain canvas
A stretched canvas straight out of the box has raw edges and no surround. A recessed float frame fixes that — the canvas sits inside a channel with a visible gap, which is the standard gallery treatment and reads considerably more finished.
Match both the size and the canvas depth when buying one: standard stretched canvas is typically about 0.75 or 1.5 inches deep and a frame cut for one will not fit the other. Floating frames.
Looking after it
- Dust with a dry soft brush. Never a damp cloth — water marks canvas and can lift inkjet pigment.
- Re-tension it if it sags. Better canvases ship with small wooden corner wedges. Tapping them further into the stretcher corners takes up the slack.
- Keep it out of direct sun. With no glazing there is no UV filter, and fading is permanent.
- Do not lean anything against the face. Canvas dents, and a dent across a stretched face does not come out.

What should you look for in canvas wall art?

Can canvas art hang without nails?
Yes, and it is the format's main advantage. A 40x30 canvas has no glazing and comes in well under the 16 pound ceiling for adhesive picture hanging strips, at a size where a glass-fronted frame would need a hook in the wall.
Why is my canvas sagging?
