Wall Art vs Painting
One is a unique object made by hand. The other is a reproduction made to a size your wall needs, at a price your wall budget allows. Those are different products, not better and worse ones.

Buy decorative wall art when the wall has a size, a color scheme and a deadline. Buy an original painting when you want the specific object and are prepared to build the room around it. If you want something that reads like a painting at a decorative price, a framed canvas is the closest format, because the weave gives the surface the texture a flat print does not have.
The honest difference is not quality. It is that a painting exists and you find it, whereas wall art is made in the size you need and you order it.

What each one actually is
"Wall art" in a shopping context means a reproduction — an image printed onto paper or canvas, produced in quantity, available in a range of sizes. A painting is a single object with paint physically on its surface, made once.
| Wall art (reproduction) | Original painting | |
|---|---|---|
| Surface | Flat print, or canvas weave under the ink | Physical paint with real relief and brush marks |
| Sizes available | Chosen from a size list to fit your wall | Whatever the artist made |
| How you choose | Image first, then size | The object as it is, or not at all |
| Cost | Priced per size, predictable | Priced per work, wide range |
| Can you get two matching | Yes, sets are sold that way | No |
| Resale | None in practice | Possible, and occasionally more than you paid |
| Lead time | Order and it arrives | Find it, or commission it and wait |
| Hanging weight | Light — canvas has no glazing | Varies; a framed oil can be heavy |
Texture is the only thing a print cannot fake
Reproduction technology has closed almost every gap. Color accuracy, resolution and paper quality on a good giclee print are not the weak point. Relief is.
A canvas print gets partway there, because the weave of the canvas puts a real physical texture under the ink, and from across a room that reads as a painted surface. What it does not have is variation: the weave is uniform, and a painting's surface is thick where the artist loaded the brush and thin where they did not.
Framing changes the perception more than people expect. A canvas in a floater frame — where a narrow gap runs between the canvas edge and the molding — reads as a painting because that is how paintings are framed. The same image behind glazing in a matted frame reads as a print, because that is how prints are framed. Canvas versus framed print works through that choice, and poster versus art print covers the quality tiers below canvas.
Scale, and where reproductions win outright
A large wall needs a large piece, and this is where the comparison stops being close. A reproduction is available at 24x36, at 36x48, in multi-panel sets — whatever the wall needs. An original painting at that scale is a different order of expense entirely.
The sizing rule is the same whichever you buy: a piece should span roughly two thirds to three quarters of the furniture it hangs above, and it should be centered at about 57 inches from the floor. What size wall art for your wall has the measurements, and art above the couch applies them to the most common case.
If you want an original anyway
Original art is not automatically expensive. Student degree shows, local art fairs, charity auctions, online marketplaces for emerging artists and secondhand shops all carry original work at prices that overlap with decorative reproductions.
Two practical warnings. Original paintings come in the size the artist painted them, which is rarely the size your wall wants — expect to build the arrangement around the piece rather than the other way round. And unframed original work on paper needs framing before it goes up, which can cost more than the work did if the size is non-standard; custom frames versus standard sizes covers where that line falls.
Hanging either one in a rental
A stretched canvas is the lightest thing on this page: no glazing, no mat, no backing board. That makes it the easiest large piece to hang damage-free, and it is why canvas dominates in rentals.
The complication is the back. A stretched canvas is hollow, so adhesive strips have to land on the wooden stretcher bars rather than the fabric span. How to hang a canvas without nails covers where those bars are and what to do when the canvas arrived with no hardware. A framed original on paper is heavier and usually glazed, so check it against the rated figures in hanging pictures without studs.

Common questions
What is the difference between wall art and a painting?
A painting is a unique object with paint physically on its surface, made once and available only at the size the artist made it. Wall art in a shopping context is a reproduction — an image printed onto paper or canvas, produced in quantity and offered in a range of sizes chosen to fit standard walls.
Is canvas art the same as a painting?
No. A canvas print is an image printed onto canvas fabric, so the weave gives it a physical texture a flat print does not have, but the surface is uniform. A painting has relief that varies across the work, thick where the brush was loaded and thin where it was not, and no printing process reproduces that.
Is wall art cheaper than an original painting?
Usually, and the gap widens with size. A reproduction is priced per size and scales predictably to 36x48 and beyond, while an original at that scale is a different order of expense. Small original work from degree shows, art fairs and emerging-artist marketplaces does overlap with reproduction prices.
Does an original painting hold its value?
It can, and a reproduction does not — there is no practical resale market for decorative prints. That said, resale is a reason to buy original work only if you chose it for that reason; most original art bought for a wall is worth what the next person will pay, which is usually less than the frame cost.
Which is easier to hang, canvas or a framed painting?
Canvas, by a long way. A stretched canvas has no glazing, no mat and no backing board, so a large one weighs a fraction of a framed piece the same size. The one complication is that the back is hollow, so adhesive fixings must land on the wooden stretcher bars rather than the fabric span.
