What Size Wall Art for Your Wall
Almost everyone buys art too small. The fix is one measurement and one fraction, and it works on a bare wall as well as over furniture.
By Janet H. · Published

Art should span roughly two-thirds of the usable wall width. Measure the wall, multiply by 0.66, and that is the total width your artwork should come to — one piece or several, including the gaps between them.
On an 8 foot wall that is about 64 inches of artwork. A single 24x36 is 36 inches, which is why one standard poster on a normal wall looks like a stamp. Three of them in a row with 3 inch gaps comes to 114 inches — too much. Two comes to 75, which is close.

The two-thirds rule, and what counts as the wall
The rule comes from gallery practice and it works because it leaves a margin of blank wall that frames the artwork the way a mat frames a print. Too little margin and the piece reads as crammed. Too much and it reads as lost.
The thing people get wrong is what they measure. “The wall” means the usable wall, which is often much narrower than the wall itself:
- Stop at the architecture. Measure between door frames, window reveals, corners and the edge of a chimney breast — not wall to wall past them.
- Stop at the furniture, if there is any. Over a sofa or a sideboard, the furniture is the wall. Size to the furniture width instead.
- Ignore the ceiling height for width purposes. It affects how high you hang, not how wide you buy.
Frame size by wall width
Worked through for the standard stocked frame sizes. The target width column is the wall width times 0.66; the options are combinations that land near it.
| Usable wall | Target art width | One piece | Or a set |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 ft (48 in) | 32 in | 24x36 portrait (24 in) or 30x40 portrait | Two 11x14 portrait with a 3 in gap (25 in) |
| 5 ft (60 in) | 40 in | 24x36 landscape (36 in) | Two 16x20 portrait with a 3 in gap (35 in) |
| 6 ft (72 in) | 48 in | 30x40 landscape (40 in) | Three 11x14 portrait, 3 in gaps (39 in) |
| 7 ft (84 in) | 55 in | A single piece this wide is rarely stocked | Two 24x36 portrait, 3 in gap (51 in) |
| 8 ft (96 in) | 64 in | Not in stock sizes | Two 24x36 landscape, 3 in gap (75 in) or three 16x20 portrait (54 in) |
| 10 ft (120 in) | 79 in | Not in stock sizes | Three 24x36 portrait, 3 in gaps (78 in) |
| 12 ft (144 in) | 95 in | Not in stock sizes | A gallery wall, or four 24x36 portrait (105 in) |
Over furniture, the furniture is the wall
This is the most common sizing situation and the rule changes: the artwork relates to the sofa or the sideboard below it, not to the wall behind it. Same fraction, different reference.
| Furniture | Typical width | Target art width | Common answer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Console table | 40 in | 26 in | One 18x24 portrait, or two 11x14 |
| Sideboard / credenza | 60 in | 40 in | One 30x40 landscape, or three 11x14 |
| Loveseat | 60 in | 40 in | One 24x36 landscape |
| Three-seat sofa | 84 in | 55 in | Two 24x36 portrait, or one oversize piece |
| Queen bed | 60 in | 40 in | One 30x40, or two 18x24 |
| King bed | 76 in | 50 in | Two 24x36 portrait, or three 16x20 |
Room-by-room versions with the hanging heights: above a couch, above a bed and above a fireplace.
Height is a separate decision
Getting the width right and the height wrong is still wrong. The two numbers are independent, and the height rule is simpler.
- On a bare wall: center of the artwork at 57 to 60 inches from the floor. This is eye level for a standing adult and it is the gallery standard.
- Over furniture: 6 to 8 inches of gap between the furniture top and the bottom of the frame. The piece should read as connected to the furniture, not floating above it.
- In a dining room: lower, because everyone is seated — hang it lower.
- On a tall wall: resist raising it. Art at 70 inches looks like it is climbing the wall. Fill the upper space with a second row instead.
The 57-inch rule explained covers where the number comes from and the exceptions.
Covering a wide wall for the least money
Large single pieces get expensive quickly, and above 24x36 the stocked sizes thin out. Three routes to the same coverage, in cost order.
- One large canvas. No glazing and no backing board, so a large canvas costs less and weighs far less than a large framed print. The cheapest square inch of coverage there is — canvas picks.
- A matched set of three or four. Three 24x36 portrait frames span 78 inches with gaps, which covers a 10 foot wall. Buying one set in one order keeps them matching — wall art sets.
- A gallery wall of mixed sizes. The most coverage per dollar if you already own frames, and the most work — the spacing numbers.
One large piece versus a gallery wall compares the two properly, and large frames covers the weight ceiling at scale.

Common questions
What size wall art for an 8 foot wall?
About 64 inches of artwork in total, which is two-thirds of 96 inches. No single stocked frame is that wide, so the usual answer is two 24x36 frames in landscape with a 3 inch gap, or three 16x20 frames in portrait. Add the molding width to every figure before you commit.
How do you know what size art to buy for a wall?
Measure the usable wall - between door frames, window reveals and corners, not wall to wall past them - and multiply by 0.66. That is the total width your artwork should come to, including the gaps if you are using more than one piece.
Is it better to go bigger or smaller with wall art?
Bigger, up to the two-thirds mark. Almost every sizing mistake is in the too-small direction, because a single standard frame on a normal wall covers a third of the width it needs to. Past two-thirds, though, slightly too large reads as a mistake and cannot be fixed without buying again.
Should wall art be centered on the wall or the furniture?
The furniture, when there is furniture. Over a sofa or a sideboard the artwork relates to the piece below it, so center it on the furniture and size it to about two-thirds of the furniture width. On a bare wall, center it on the wall.
What is the cheapest way to fill a large wall?
One large canvas. There is no glazing and no backing board in the price or the weight, which makes it the cheapest square inch of coverage available. A matched set of three or four frames is next, and a gallery wall of mixed sizes is the most coverage per dollar if you already own the frames.
