What Size Art Above a Fireplace
The mantel sets the width and the shelf sets the height. Both numbers are arithmetic, and the usual eye-level rule does not apply here.
By Janet H. · Published

Make the art narrower than the mantel — the shelf width minus roughly 6 to 8 inches of wall on each side — and hang it 6 to 12 inches above the shelf. For the common 60 inch mantel that means art around 44 to 48 inches wide.
Ignore the 57 inch eye-level rule here. The fireplace has already raised the whole arrangement, so the center of the piece sits above standing eye level by design, and forcing it down to 57 inches crowds the shelf.

The sizing table by mantel width
Measure the mantel shelf, not the firebox and not the chimney breast. The shelf is the line the eye reads the art against.
| Mantel shelf width | Art width | Single piece | Or a set |
|---|---|---|---|
| 48 in | 32 - 36 in | One 30x40 portrait or 24x36 landscape | Two 16x20 side by side |
| 54 in | 38 - 42 in | One 24x36 landscape | Three 11x14 in a row |
| 60 in | 44 - 48 in | One 30x40 or 36x48 landscape | Three 16x20 in a row |
| 66 in | 50 - 54 in | One 36x48 landscape | Two 24x30 side by side |
| 72 in | 56 - 60 in | One 40x60 landscape | Three 18x24 in a row |
How far above the shelf
Published guidance puts the gap between the top of the mantel shelf and the bottom of the artwork at 6 to 12 inches: 6 to 8 inches in a room with standard 8 foot ceilings, 10 to 12 inches where the ceilings are taller. A regularly used wood-burning fireplace wants at least 12 inches, and that is a heat decision rather than a visual one.
| Situation | Clearance above the shelf | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 8 ft ceilings, decorative or gas fire | 6 - 8 in | Keeps the art visually attached to the mantel |
| 9 ft ceilings or taller | 10 - 12 in | The extra wall above needs filling or the piece floats low |
| Wood-burning, used regularly | 12 in minimum | Heat and soot rise directly up the chimney breast |
| Objects on the shelf | Measure from the tallest object, not the shelf | A tall vase overlapping the frame is the usual mistake |
Which format survives above a fire
A chimney breast gets warmer and drier than the rest of the room, and in an active wood-burning setup it gets particulates too. That makes format a real decision rather than a preference.
- Canvas is the easy answer. No glazing means no condensation trapped against anything and no reflections from the fire, and it is light enough to hang on adhesive fixings at a size the mantel actually wants.
- A framed print needs a mat. The mat holds the paper off the glazing, which matters more in a warm, dry, fluctuating spot than it does on an ordinary wall. Matted frames.
- Mirrors reflect the room, not the art. A common choice above a mantel, and worth testing with a phone camera first — what it reflects is usually the ceiling light.
- Nothing irreplaceable. Original work on paper above a working fire is a slow risk, and the same reasoning applies as in a bathroom: frames in damp or hostile rooms.
Canvas versus framed print covers the trade-off in full.
Hanging on a chimney breast
The substrate decides the method, and chimney breasts are the least predictable walls in a house. Plaster over brick, drywall on battens, or bare brick are all common, and they want different fixings.
On smooth painted drywall, adhesive strips work normally — 3M rates a set of Command Large Picture Hanging Strips at 4 lb and up to four sets per frame for 16 lb, which covers a canvas at mantel scale. Picture hanging strips. On exposed brick, nothing adhesive will hold, and brick clips that spring over a brick course are the no-damage answer: hanging on brick without drilling. On plaster over masonry, adhesive is unreliable and a small-hole drywall hook will not work either, because there is no cavity behind the surface.
Test before you commit: press a hand flat on the wall above the mantel and tap. A hollow sound is drywall and your options are wide. A dead thud is masonry and they are narrow. How high to hang art covers the general height rule this page overrides.

Common questions
What size art should go above a fireplace?
Narrower than the mantel shelf — the shelf width less roughly 6 to 8 inches of visible wall on each side. A 60 inch mantel, the most common size, wants art around 44 to 48 inches wide. Art wider than the shelf reads as a mistake, because the mantel appears to be holding something too big for it.
How high above a mantel should you hang art?
6 to 12 inches from the top of the shelf to the bottom of the frame: 6 to 8 inches with standard 8 foot ceilings, 10 to 12 inches in taller rooms. A wood-burning fireplace used regularly wants at least 12 inches. Measure from the tallest object on the shelf, not from the shelf itself.
Does the 57 inch rule apply above a fireplace?
No. The fireplace has already raised the whole arrangement, so the center of the piece sits above standing eye level by design. Forcing the center down to 57 inches crowds the mantel shelf and leaves a band of empty wall above the art.
Is canvas better than a framed print above a fireplace?
Usually yes. Canvas has no glazing, so it does not reflect firelight and nothing is sealed against the artwork in a spot that runs warmer and drier than the rest of the room. If you want a framed print there, put a mat in it so the paper is held off the glazing.
How do you hang art on a chimney breast without drilling?
It depends what the breast is made of. Smooth painted drywall takes adhesive strips normally — 3M rates a set of Command Large Picture Hanging Strips at 4 lb and allows four sets per frame for 16 lb. Exposed brick needs brick clips that spring over a course. Plaster over masonry has no cavity, so small-hole drywall hooks will not work there.
