Best Picture Frames for a Bathroom
A bathroom is the one room in the house that attacks a frame. Three specifications decide whether a frame survives it, and the artwork matters more than the frame.
By Janet H. · Published

Buy an acrylic-glazed frame, put a mat in it, and hang a print you can replace. The mat is the important part: it holds the paper off the glazing, so when condensation forms on the inside of the sheet it is not forming against your artwork.
Conservation framers give the same advice for any damp room — a spacer keeps the paper away from the glazing, because high or changing humidity condenses on the inside of the glazing and without an air space that leads to mildew and water spots. Nothing irreplaceable belongs on a bathroom wall.

What actually fails in a bathroom
Frames do not fail in bathrooms because of water splashes. They fail because paper and humidity are in a relationship, and a bathroom changes humidity faster than any other room.
| Failure | Cause | What prevents it |
|---|---|---|
| Print goes wavy | Paper absorbs moisture and expands, then dries and contracts | A mat and a hinge mount that lets the sheet move; never dry-mount it flat |
| Spots and mildew between glazing and print | Condensation forms on the inside of the glazing with no air gap | A mat or spacer holding the paper off the glazing |
| Mat board yellows and marks the print | Non-archival board discolors and transfers along the bevel | Acid-free mat board, stated explicitly on the listing |
| Frame joints swell or lift | Engineered wood absorbs moisture at the miters | Acrylic, composite or aluminum frames rather than MDF |
Acrylic or glass in a damp room
Acrylic, for two reasons that have nothing to do with optics. It is lighter, which matters because a bathroom wall is often tile and your fixing options are limited. And it does not shatter in a room with a hard floor and bare feet.
Framers differ on the moisture question itself — glass is the better vapor barrier, while acrylic lets some moisture pass through rather than trapping it inside the package. In a room where humidity swings hourly, a frame that can breathe slightly is the safer bet than one that seals a damp print in. Either way the mat matters more than the glazing choice. The full acrylic versus glass comparison.
Where on the wall, and how high
Keep the frame away from the shower. The wall opposite the bath, the wall behind the door and the strip above a towel rail are all meaningfully drier than the wall the shower sprays onto, and that difference is larger than any specification on the frame.
Height follows the same rule as the rest of the house: center the artwork at eye level, roughly 57 to 60 inches from the floor to the middle of the piece. Bathrooms tempt people to hang high because of fittings and tiling courses, and the result looks accidental. How high to hang art.
Small is right here. Bathrooms are the one room where a 5x7 or 8x10 at close viewing distance makes sense, because nobody is ever more than a few feet away. 5x7 frames and 8x10 frames.
Mounting on tile without drilling
Tile is the surface most people assume they cannot use, and it is actually one of the easiest. 3M lists tile among the surfaces Command products are designed to stick to, alongside painted wood, plaster, metal and wallboard — the requirement is that the surface is smooth and clean, which glazed tile is by definition.
Two caveats specific to this room. Mount on a dry, cool tile, not one that has just been steamed, and give the adhesive the full cure time before hanging weight on it. And keep the frame light: acrylic glazing at 8x10 is comfortably inside the 4 lb per set that 3M rates for Command Large Picture Hanging Strips. Hanging on tile without drilling covers the method, and adhesive wall hooks covers the hardware.

Common questions
Can you hang framed pictures in a bathroom?
Yes, with two conditions. Put a mat or spacer in the frame so the paper is held off the glazing, and hang artwork you can replace rather than anything irreplaceable. Conservation framers advise against putting works on paper in bathrooms at all precisely because the humidity swings are large and repeated.
What kind of picture frame is best for a bathroom?
An acrylic-glazed frame with a mat, in a material that does not swell: acrylic, composite or aluminum rather than bare engineered wood. Acrylic is also lighter and will not shatter on a tile floor, both of which matter more in this room than optical clarity does.
Does humidity ruin framed prints?
It can, in three ways: the paper absorbs moisture and goes wavy, condensation forms on the inside of the glazing and causes spots or mildew where it touches the print, and non-archival mat board discolors and transfers a line onto the paper. A mat holding the print off the glazing prevents the second and reduces the first.
Should bathroom frames have glass or acrylic?
Acrylic. Framers disagree on which is the better moisture barrier — glass seals better, acrylic lets some moisture pass through rather than trapping it — but acrylic wins on weight and on not shattering in a room with a hard floor. The mat matters more than the glazing either way.
How do you hang a picture on a bathroom tile wall?
Adhesive strips. 3M lists tile among the surfaces Command products are designed to stick to, so glazed tile is one of the easier surfaces to work with. Mount on dry, cool tile rather than tile that has just been steamed, and allow the full cure time before hanging weight on it.
