Best 5x7 Picture Frames
5x7 is the size that has to work on a shelf and on a wall. That one requirement rules out more frames than any specification does.
By Janet H. · Published

Buy a 5x7 that stands and hangs, with real glass if it is going on a desk and plexiglass if it is going on a wall. At this size the frame gets handled, moved and knocked, so the glazing choice is about where it lives rather than about optical quality.
If the 5x7 is for a wall rather than a shelf, do not buy a 5x7 frame at all. An 8x10 or 11x14 frame with a 5x7 mat opening gives the print the scale a wall needs.

Decide desk or wall first — it changes everything
A 5x7 is 35 square inches of image. On a shelf at arm’s length that is generous. On a wall at six feet it is a postage stamp, and this is the single most common mistake with the size.
| Where it goes | Frame to buy | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Desk, shelf, nightstand | A 5x7 frame with a stand and real glass | It gets handled; glass stays optically flat and resists scratching from dusting |
| On a wall, alone | An 11x14 frame matted to 5x7 | The mat gives the print the scale the wall demands without buying a bigger print |
| On a wall, in a group | Matched 5x7 frames with plexiglass | Repetition supplies the scale; plexiglass keeps each frame inside adhesive-strip ratings |
| Several 5x7 photos, one fixing | A multi-opening frame with 5x7 windows | One frame, one hole, four photographs — and the mat does the spacing for you |
The 5x7 step-downs that are actually stocked
| Frame | Opening | Border | Reads as |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5x7 | None (full bleed) | — | A photograph in a frame |
| 8x10 | 5x7 | 1.5 in | A framed photograph — the common desk upgrade |
| 11x14 | 5x7 | 3 in | A framed piece of art, and wall-ready |
| 12x16 | Four 5x7 windows | Mat between | A set, hung as one object |
The 11x14-to-5x7 step-down is the one worth knowing. A 3 inch border is the point at which a mat stops looking like packing and starts looking like framing — and it is cheaper than buying an 11x14 print. The full mat size matrix lists every stocked pair.
Glass or plexiglass at this size
At 5x7 the weight argument for plexiglass almost disappears — a sheet of glass this small weighs very little. So the decision inverts from what it is at poster sizes.
On a desk, buy glass. It stays flat, it does not scuff when you wipe dust off it, and it does not pick up the fine scratch haze that acrylic develops after a year of handling. On a wall in a group, buy plexiglass — not for the frame’s sake but so four frames together stay inside the rated weight of adhesive strips. Acrylic versus glass in full.
5x7 is the best size for a dense group
Small frames reward repetition in a way large ones do not. Nine 5x7 frames in a tight grid reads as one deliberate object; nine 16x20 frames reads as a storage problem. This is the size to use when you have a narrow wall, a stair wall, or a run above a console and you want density rather than scale.
Keep the gap between frames tight — 2 to 3 inches at this size, not the 3 to 4 you would use for larger pieces. Layout and spacing has the measurements, and the layout templates have arrangements drawn to scale. For several 5x7 photographs behind one mat, collage frames are the format built for it.
If the 5x7 is going on a desk or a shelf rather than a wall, the back fitting matters more than anything on the front — best small picture frames compares them on easel feet and dual orientation.

Common questions
What size frame do I need for a 5x7 photo?
A 5x7 frame if it is going on a desk or shelf. If it is going on a wall on its own, buy an 11x14 frame with a 5x7 mat opening instead — the 3 inch border gives the print the scale a wall needs without buying a larger print.
Is 5x7 too small to hang on a wall?
On its own, usually yes at normal viewing distance. A 5x7 is 35 square inches and stops reading beyond about four feet. Two fixes work: mat it up to 11x14, or hang several in a tight group so repetition supplies the scale instead of size.
What mat size do I need for a 5x7 print?
An 8x10 frame gives a 1.5 inch border around a 5x7, and an 11x14 frame gives about 3 inches. Both pairings are sold ready-matted and as pre-cut mats, so no cutting is needed either way.
Should a 5x7 frame have glass or plexiglass?
Glass on a desk, plexiglass on a wall. At this size glass weighs very little, so the usual weight argument disappears, and glass resists the fine scratch haze that acrylic picks up from handling and dusting. For a wall group hung on adhesive strips, plexiglass keeps the total weight down.
How far apart should 5x7 frames be in a group?
Tighter than larger frames: 2 to 3 inches between frames rather than 3 to 4. Small frames need density to read as one arrangement, and wide gaps at this size make the group look scattered.
