Best Cheap Picture Frames
An inexpensive frame and a frame that looks inexpensive are two different things. Three specifications separate them, and none of them is the price.
By Janet H. · Published

Buy a multi-pack with the mat included. That one decision does more for how an inexpensive frame reads than any amount of extra spend on the molding. A plain frame around a generously matted print looks deliberate. The same money spent on a fancier frame with the print edge-to-edge looks like a cheap frame.
Where cheap frames genuinely fall down is glazing: thin styrene sheet goes wavy and reflects in bands. Shatter-resistant plexiglass costs almost nothing more and is the line worth not crossing.

What you actually give up at the bottom of the market
Budget frames are not uniformly worse. They are worse in four specific, visible ways, and you can buy around three of them.
| What gets cut | How it shows | Can you buy around it? |
|---|---|---|
| Glazing | Thin styrene ripples, so reflections bend across the surface in bands | Yes — insist on plexiglass or acrylic, which is standard even on cheap lines |
| Molding depth | A very shallow profile reads as a sticker on the wall rather than an object | Partly — look for a stated molding width of around 0.75 in or more |
| Mat board | Either no mat, or a thin mat with a straight-cut rather than beveled opening | Yes — a mat in the box is the single biggest visual upgrade available |
| Corner joins | Visible gaps at the miters on the cheapest engineered-wood frames | No, not reliably. This is where the money has gone |
Why the multi-pack is the real answer
Single budget frames and multi-pack budget frames are usually the same frame. The pack is simply where the per-frame cost drops, because the packaging and the shipping are shared across the units.
That matters more than it sounds, because almost nobody hangs one frame. A wall of five matched frames from one pack is both cheaper and better-looking than five frames bought one at a time — the matching is free when it comes from one order. Buying frames in bulk covers the arithmetic at larger counts.
The upgrade that costs almost nothing
Buy one frame size larger than your print and add a pre-cut mat. An 8x10 print in a 16x20 frame with a 3 inch border reads as a framed piece of art; the same print in an 8x10 frame reads as a photograph in a frame. The frame cost difference at the budget end is small and the visual difference is not.
Pre-cut mats come in the same standard step-down pairs the frames do, so no cutting is involved. The mat size matrix lists which pairs exist, and how to mat a print covers the assembly. If you want it done for you, matted frames ship with the mat already cut.
One more thing the mat does for free: it holds the paper off the glazing, which is what stops a print sticking to the inside of the sheet in a warm room.
Cheap frames hang better than expensive ones
A budget frame with plexiglass glazing weighs a fraction of the same size in wood with real glass. That is the quiet advantage: it comes in under the rated weight of adhesive strips, so it goes up without a single hole in the wall.
3M rates a set of Command Large Picture Hanging Strips at 4 lb, and allows up to four sets on one frame for 16 lb — which covers most plexiglass-glazed frames up to about 16x20. Picture hanging strips and hanging without nails cover the method.
Two cheaper routes worth comparing against an empty frame: affordable framed wall art, which usually costs less than a print plus a frame plus a mat, and black frames, the finish with the widest stocked size range and therefore the least premium for an awkward size.
Most of the saving at this end of the market comes from where you buy rather than what you buy. Where to buy picture frames online compares the four routes and is blunt about which economies carry a real risk.
Making one is the obvious next thought, and at a standard size it is the wrong one — DIY picture frame versus buying one works through why the glazing alone costs more than a finished frame.

Common questions
Are cheap picture frames worth buying?
Yes, if you buy the right cheap frame. Insist on plexiglass or acrylic glazing rather than thin styrene, a mat in the box, and a stated molding width of around 0.75 inches or more. Those three specifications separate an inexpensive frame from a frame that looks inexpensive, and none of them costs much.
What is the cheapest way to frame a lot of pictures?
A matched multi-pack in one standard size. The per-frame cost falls because the packaging and shipping are shared, and the frames match for free because they came from one order. 8x10, 11x14 and 16x20 are the highest-volume sizes and therefore the best value.
Why do cheap frames look cheap?
Usually the glazing, not the frame. Thin styrene sheet ripples, so reflections bend across the surface in visible bands, and that distortion sits in front of the artwork. The second cause is no mat: a print running edge-to-edge inside a frame reads as a photograph in a frame rather than a framed piece of art.
Does a mat make a cheap frame look more expensive?
Substantially, and it is the highest-return change available at any price. A plain frame around a generously matted print reads as deliberate. Going up one frame size and adding a pre-cut mat is almost always cheaper than buying a better frame.
Can cheap frames be hung without nails?
Usually yes, and more easily than expensive ones, because plexiglass glazing weighs a fraction of real glass. 3M rates a set of Command Large Picture Hanging Strips at 4 lb and allows up to four sets per frame for 16 lb, which covers most plexiglass-glazed frames up to about 16x20.
