Best Affordable Framed Wall Art

Buying art that arrives framed beats framing a print yourself on cost almost every time. It also beats it on effort, and loses on exactly one thing.

By · Published

Framed art prints leaning against a wall before hanging

Buy framed. Art sold already framed is almost always cheaper than the same print plus a frame plus a mat, because the manufacturer buys the molding by the mile and ships it all in one box. The Americanflat and Haus and Hues framed sets are where that saving is clearest.

The one thing you give up: the artwork is chosen for you. If you have a specific print you want on the wall, buying framed is irrelevant — that job is a frame purchase, and the cheap frame roundup covers it.

Why ready-framed comes out cheaper

Framing a print yourself means paying for four separate things, each with its own markup and its own shipping. Framed art is one line item.

What you pay forFraming it yourselfBuying it framed
The artworkBought separately, often shipped rolledIncluded, printed to fit
The frameBought separately at retail unit priceIncluded at manufacturing cost
The matBought separately, or cut yourselfIncluded or designed out
ShippingTwo or three deliveriesOne
Size matchingYour problem - and the usual failure pointAlready correct
Flattening a rolled printDays under weightNot needed
AssemblyTwenty minutes per piece, with fingerprints on the glazingNone
The size-matching row is where most self-framing projects actually go wrong, not the cost row.

The four things to check before buying framed

Ready-framed art is where corners get cut, and they get cut in predictable places. All four of these are usually in the listing if you look.

  1. Glazing, and whether there is any. Plexiglass is good and light. Thin styrene scratches on the way out of the box. “No glazing” means canvas, which is fine — just know which you are getting.
  2. Paper weight, if it is a paper print. A stated GSM figure is a good sign. 200 GSM and up holds ink properly; lightweight paper shows the backing board through it in raking light.
  3. Hanging hardware. Two hangers per frame rather than one means it can be leveled. One sawtooth in the middle means it will go crooked and will fight adhesive strips.
  4. Whether the frame opens. A sealed back means you can never change the artwork. Not a dealbreaker, but it changes what the thing is worth over ten years.

Framed canvas or framed paper

Ready-framed art comes in both, they cost similar amounts, and they suit different walls. This is the real decision on this page.

Framed canvasFramed paper print
GlazingNone - the surface is openPlexiglass, styrene or glass
Weight at 24x36Light - no glazing, no backing boardNoticeably heavier
Glare under a downlightNone - matte surfaceYes, with glazing
Protected from dust and greaseNoYes
Bathroom or kitchenPoor - fabric holds moisture and greaseAcceptable with acrylic
Reads asAn art objectFinished and formal
Changeable laterNo - the artwork is the canvasSometimes, if the back opens
Canvas for weight and for rooms with bad lighting. Paper behind glazing for anything that needs protecting.

Canvas versus framed print is the full comparison, and hanging a canvas without nails covers the back-of-a-canvas problem.

Sets are where the saving is largest

A set of three or six framed pieces is the cheapest way to cover a wall properly, because the per-frame cost drops and because the sizing arithmetic is done for you.

That second part is worth more than it sounds. The published configuration of a six-piece set — one 19x25, two 9x11 and three 12x15, for instance — is a layout someone has already made work. Assembling the same coverage from singles means doing the measuring yourself.

  • Check the total width against two-thirds of your wall before ordering — the sizing table has the figures.
  • Check whether a layout template is included. Some sets ship one, and it saves an hour.
  • Buy the whole set in one order. Across two orders the frame finish can differ between production batches.

The wall art set roundup covers the set formats, and gallery wall frame sets covers the empty-frame equivalent.

Making inexpensive framed art read as expensive

Three changes, none of which cost much, and all of which do more than spending more on the art would.

  1. Hang it at the right height. Center at 57 to 60 inches. Art hung high is the single most common giveaway and it is free to fix — the 57-inch rule.
  2. Hang it tight to the wall. A frame hanging off a single hook sits proud at the bottom and catches light under its edge. Adhesive strips hold it flat — strips by weight.
  3. Give it room. Blank wall around a piece does the same job a mat does around a print. Crowding is what makes a wall look cheap, not the art.

The full version of this goes further, including what a wide mat does to an inexpensive print.

Common questions

Is it cheaper to buy framed art or frame a print yourself?

Buying it framed, in almost every case, because the manufacturer buys the molding at scale and ships the artwork, frame, mat and glazing in one box. Framing it yourself only wins when you already own the frame, which is why buying prints in standard sizes matters.

What should you check before buying framed wall art?

The glazing type, the paper weight if it is a paper print, whether there are two hangers per frame rather than one sawtooth, and whether the back opens so the artwork can be changed. All four are usually in the listing, and all four are where corners get cut.

Is framed canvas or framed paper better?

Canvas for weight and for rooms with bad lighting - there is no glazing, so no glare under a downlight and nothing to break. Framed paper behind glazing for anything that needs protecting from dust and grease, including bathrooms and kitchens where fabric does badly.

Are framed art sets worth it?

Yes, and more than for the money saved. The published configuration of a set is a layout someone has already made work, so the sizing arithmetic is done for you. Check the total width against two-thirds of your wall before ordering, and buy the whole set in one order so the finishes match.

How do you make cheap framed art look expensive?

Hang it with the center at 57 to 60 inches, hold it flat to the wall rather than hanging it off a single hook, and leave blank wall around it. Hanging too high and crowding a wall are what make art read as cheap - far more than what the art cost.
