Best 4x6 Picture Frames
4x6 is the print size everyone already has hundreds of. The frame question is almost never which one — it is how many, and whether they share a mat.
By Janet H. · Published

Buy 4x6 frames in a multi-pack, and buy one multi-opening frame as well. 4x6 is the standard photo-lab print, so the realistic problem is not framing one — it is framing eight without the wall looking like a noticeboard.
A single 4x6 on a wall does not read at all. Either group them tightly, or put five or nine behind one mat in a collage frame so the whole thing hangs from one fixing. If the wall is off limits altogether, magnetic picture frames put the same print size on a fridge door for a fraction of the cost.

Four 4x6 formats, and when each is right
| Format | What it is | Right when |
|---|---|---|
| Single 4x6 frame | One frame, one print, usually with a stand | It lives on a desk, nightstand or shelf at arm's length |
| Matched multi-pack | Four to ten identical frames in one order | You want a tight grid, or several shelves dressed consistently |
| Multi-opening collage frame | One frame, one mat, five to nine 4x6 windows | You want many photographs and exactly one hole in the wall |
| Matted step-up | An 8x10 or 11x14 frame with a 4x6 opening | A single photograph has to hold a wall on its own |
The multi-opening arithmetic
Collage frames are the efficient answer at this size, and the published configurations are worth knowing before you buy, because the overall frame size is what has to fit your wall.
| Openings | Overall frame | Shape on the wall |
|---|---|---|
| Three 4x6 | Roughly 6x20 | A narrow horizontal band — good above a door or light switch run |
| Five 4x6 | 11x14 | A compact block that reads as one framed piece |
| Six 4x6 | 14x14 square | A square, which sits well between two taller objects |
| Nine 4x6 | About 13.6x19.7 | A grid — the densest 4x6 arrangement from one fixing |
The collage frame roundup goes through every configuration in detail.
If you grid them, grid them tight
A 4x6 grid lives or dies on the gap. At 2 inches between frames a block of nine reads as one object. At 4 inches it reads as nine small frames that happen to be near each other, and the wall looks unfinished.
The practical trouble with a nine-frame grid is alignment: nine frames means eighteen chances to be a few millimeters out, and the eye catches every one. Templates fix this — the to-scale layout templates include grid arrangements with frame counts and dimensions labelled, and layouts and spacing has the measurements.
A picture ledge is the alternative worth considering: 4x6 frames are light and short enough to lean rather than hang, and the arrangement then changes in seconds. Picture ledges.
Hanging 4x6 frames without holes
This is the easiest size in framing to hang damage-free. A 4x6 frame with plexiglass glazing is well under a pound, so a single small adhesive strip set holds it and 3M rates its Small Picture Hanging Strips at 1 lb per set.
For a grid, use two sets per frame anyway — not for weight but for level. Two fixings stop a light frame rotating when someone brushes past it, which is the real failure mode at this size. Picture hanging strips.
For a desk or a narrow shelf rather than a wall, the comparison shifts to how the frame stands. Best small picture frames covers the easel feet, dual-orientation backs and shelf frames that suit that job.

Common questions
What is the best way to frame a lot of 4x6 photos?
A multi-opening collage frame if you want one fixing, or a matched multi-pack if you want a grid of separate frames. A five-opening 11x14 frame and a nine-opening frame around 13.6x19.7 inches are the two common configurations, and both put every print behind one mat.
Is a 4x6 frame too small to hang on a wall?
On its own, yes, at normal viewing distance — a 4x6 is 24 square inches and does not register as an image beyond a few feet. Group several tightly, or mat a single print up to 11x14 so the border supplies the scale.
Why is the opening in a 4x6 collage frame smaller than 4x6?
Deliberately. The window is typically cut around 3.5 x 5.5 inches so the mat overlaps the print edge and holds it in place. It means roughly a quarter inch of the photograph is hidden on each side, so crop with that in mind if the subject sits near the edge.
How far apart should 4x6 frames be in a grid?
About 2 inches. Small frames need density to read as one arrangement; at 4 inches apart a block of nine 4x6 frames reads as nine separate small frames rather than a single piece.
Can you hang 4x6 frames without nails?
Easily — this is the simplest size in framing to hang damage-free. A plexiglass-glazed 4x6 frame weighs well under a pound, and 3M rates a set of its Small Picture Hanging Strips at 1 lb. Use two sets per frame anyway so a light frame cannot rotate out of level.
