Hanging Pictures on Tile Without Drilling

Tile is one of the easiest surfaces for adhesive, not one of the hardest. The rules that matter are about grout lines and steam, not about strength.

A contemporary tiled bathroom wall with simple fittings

Adhesive works on tile. 3M lists tile among the surfaces Command products are designed to stick to, alongside painted wood, plaster, metal and wallboard — glazed tile is exactly the smooth, non-porous surface the adhesive wants.

Two rules decide whether it holds. Keep the whole fixing on one tile face, never bridging a grout line. And mount on a cool, dry, degreased tile, then give it the full cure time before hanging anything on it.

Why tile is a good surface, not a bad one

Adhesive needs two things from a wall: smoothness, so the whole face of the strip is in contact, and a non-porous surface, so the bond is to the material rather than to a layer of dust. Glazed tile is the best example of both in an average house — better than painted drywall, which is slightly porous and often textured.

SurfaceSmooth?Non-porous?Adhesive verdict
Glazed ceramic or porcelain tileYesYesExcellent — the ideal case
Grout lineNo — recessed and roughNo — cementitious and porousFails. Never bridge one
Unglazed, matte or stone tileSometimesNoUnreliable; test before committing
Textured or relief tileNoYesFails — too little contact area
3M specifies its products for smooth surfaces and does not recommend them on rough or porous ones.

What it will hold

Published 3M ratings apply unchanged on tile, because the surface is not the limiting factor — the adhesive is.

Large hook5 lbA frame with a sawtooth or wire back
Jumbo hook7.5 lbThe heaviest single adhesive point available
3M's published figures. Derate on tile in a steamy room rather than working to the ceiling.

Keep well inside those numbers in a bathroom. A frame that falls in a bathroom lands on hard tile or a bath edge, so the consequence of a marginal fixing is worse here than anywhere else — which is also the argument for acrylic glazing rather than glass. Picture frames for a bathroom.

The method, in order

  1. Pick the tile, not the position. Choose a whole tile face big enough for the fixing, then center the frame on that. A tile wall has a grid, and working with it looks better than fighting it anyway.
  2. Degrease. Bathroom and kitchen tiles carry a film of soap, hair product or cooking aerosol that no household cleaner fully removes. Wipe with isopropyl alcohol and let it flash off. Do not use a spray cleaner — the surfactants left behind are exactly what kills the bond.
  3. Mount cool and dry. Not after a shower, not on a tile warmed by underfloor heating or sun. Adhesive bonds poorly to a warm surface and worse to a damp one.
  4. Press for 30 seconds, then wait. Press each fixing firmly, then leave it the full cure time stated on the pack before hanging weight. Skipping the wait is the most common cause of failure on any surface.
  5. Use two fixings. Even on a light frame, two points stop it rotating. On a tile grid a rotated frame is obvious, because the tile lines give the eye a reference.

If the tile is textured or stone

Relief tile, split-face stone and unglazed terracotta all fail the smoothness test, and no adhesive product gets round that. Three alternatives that do not touch the tile at all:

  • Hang above the tile. Most tiled walls stop partway up. A fixing in the painted plaster above the tile line puts the frame where it was probably better placed anyway.
  • Lean it. A small frame leaning on a shelf, a bath edge or a vanity top needs no fixing and reads deliberately in a bathroom. Picture ledges.
  • Suction, for light frames only. Suction cups need a smooth surface too, so they help only on a glossy tile where adhesive would have worked anyway — and they release without warning. Not for anything you would mind dropping.

For the other surfaces that defeat adhesive: textured walls, wallpaper and concrete.

Common questions

Can you hang pictures on tile without drilling?

Yes, and tile is one of the better surfaces for it. 3M lists tile among the surfaces Command products are designed to stick to, because glazed tile is smooth and non-porous — the two things adhesive needs. Keep the whole fixing on one tile face and never bridge a grout line.

Why should adhesive not cross a grout line?

Because grout is recessed, rough and porous, so it contributes nothing to the bond. A strip bridging two tiles may have only 60% of its face in contact while the published rating assumed 100%. Measure the tile and choose a fixing size that fits inside one face.

How much weight will Command strips hold on tile?

The published ratings apply unchanged, because the adhesive rather than the tile is the limiting factor: 1 lb per set for Small, 3 lb per set and 12 lb per frame for Medium, and 4 lb per set and 16 lb per frame for Large. Stay well inside them in a bathroom, where a fall lands on something hard.

How do you prepare a bathroom tile before sticking something to it?

Wipe it with isopropyl alcohol, not a household spray cleaner — the surfactants a spray leaves behind are what kills the bond, and bathroom tiles carry a film of soap and hair product that normal cleaning does not remove. Mount on a cool, dry tile, not one that has just been steamed.

Will adhesive work on textured or stone tile?

No. Relief tile, split-face stone and unglazed terracotta all fail the smoothness test and no adhesive product gets round it. Hang in the painted plaster above the tile line instead, or lean a small frame on a shelf or vanity top.
