Best Large Picture Frames
Above 16x20 a frame stops being a decorating decision and becomes a weight problem. Glazing is what you are really choosing.
By Janet H. · Published

For anything 16x20 or larger, buy acrylic glazing, not glass. At that size glass adds enough weight to put the frame outside what any adhesive strip can hold, and it turns a dropped frame into a safety problem. Americanflat is the default for stocked large sizes; Craig Frames is the answer when your art is a size nobody stocks.
One large piece is also the cheapest way to fill a big wall. A single 24x36 covers more wall than six 8x10s, costs less than six frames, and needs one set of fixings instead of six. If the wall in question is above a sofa, picture frames for a living room sizes the frame to the furniture rather than to the wall.

Where large actually starts
There is no official threshold, but the handling changes at a predictable point. Below 16x20 a frame is a one-person, one-hand job. Above it, almost nothing about hanging stays the same.
| Size | Handling | Hanging | Glazing to buy |
|---|---|---|---|
| 11x14 | One hand | A single hook or one pair of strips | Glass or acrylic, your choice |
| 16x20 | Two hands | Two pairs of strips, or one hook rated above the frame weight | Acrylic strongly preferred |
| 18x24 | Two hands, awkward | Four pairs of strips, or a rated hook | Acrylic |
| 24x36 | Two people to hang level | Four pairs of strips at the limit, or a drilled fixing | Acrylic only |
| 30x40 and up | Two people | A drilled fixing or a picture rail | Acrylic only |
Buy to the outer size, not the nominal size
A large frame adds its molding width on all four sides, and at this scale the moldings are wider. A 24x36 in a 2 inch gallery profile occupies 28 x 40 inches of wall. That is four extra inches in each direction, which is enough to make it not fit between two windows.
Measure the wall, then subtract before you buy:
- Leave at least 6 inches of clear wall on each side of a large piece, or it reads as crammed.
- Over furniture, the frame should be about two-thirds the width of the furniture below it — the two-thirds rule explains why.
- On a bare wall, size it to the wall width instead.
When your art is not a standard size
Large art goes non-standard far more often than small art does. Original work, commissioned pieces and anything bought abroad frequently lands between stocked sizes, and at large dimensions the gap is too big to hide.
Three routes, in order of cost:
- Buy the next stocked size up and mat the difference. A 20x30 print in a 24x36 frame with a cut mat looks deliberate, costs the least, and is what a framer would do anyway. The mat matrix has the pairs.
- Buy made-to-size from a line that offers it. Craig Frames will cut a molding to your dimensions, which costs more than stock but far less than a bespoke framer.
- Full custom framing. The right answer for a valuable original and an expensive answer for anything else — what custom framing actually buys you breaks the cost down.
Hanging a large frame without drilling
This is where most large-frame purchases go wrong, because the frame arrives, the adhesive strips in the drawer are rated for 4 lb, and the frame is heavier than that.
The sequence that works:
- Weigh the frame on a kitchen scale before it goes anywhere near the wall. Do not estimate from the listing.
- Check the rating against the real number. The published strip ratings are per pair, and the per-frame maximum is lower than four times one pair.
- If it is over the limit, use a no-drill hanging kit or a picture rail, which carries far more than any adhesive.
- Never hang a large glass frame over a bed on adhesive. That is the one case where the answer is a drilled fixing or a different piece.
One large frame or several small ones
Large frames are usually bought to solve a bare wall, and a gallery wall solves the same problem. The honest comparison:
| One large frame | A gallery wall | |
|---|---|---|
| Wall covered per dollar | Higher - one frame, one piece of glazing | Lower - every frame has its own molding and glazing |
| Fixings needed | One set | One set per frame |
| Margin for error | None - a crooked single piece is obvious | Forgiving - the arrangement absorbs small errors |
| Weight per fixing | All of it in one place | Spread across the wall |
| Changeable later | Swap the print inside it | Add and move frames indefinitely |
| Time to hang | Twenty minutes | An afternoon |
The full head-to-head goes further, including what each one does to a small room.
A finished puzzle is the large-format case with its own rules, because the contents are thicker than paper and the size is never standard. Best picture frames for puzzles covers rabbet depth and the made-to-size route.

Common questions
What is considered a large picture frame?
Practically, 16x20 and above, because that is where the handling changes. Below it a frame is a one-hand job on a single hook. Above it you need two hands, two or more pairs of strips, and acrylic glazing rather than glass.
Can you hang a large picture frame with Command strips?
Up to a point. Weigh the frame on a kitchen scale first, then check it against the published per-frame maximum rather than the per-pair rating. A 24x36 with acrylic glazing is usually within reach of four pairs of large strips; the same frame with glass usually is not.
Should a large picture frame have glass or acrylic?
Acrylic, at 16x20 and above. Glass weighs roughly two and a half times as much over the same area, which pushes the frame past what adhesive hanging can hold, and a sheet of glass that size is a safety problem above a bed or a sofa.
What size frame for a large blank wall?
Measure the wall and aim for the artwork to span roughly two-thirds to three-quarters of the usable width, leaving at least 6 inches of clear wall each side. Over furniture, size it to the furniture rather than the wall - about two-thirds the width of the sofa or sideboard.
Is one large frame cheaper than a gallery wall?
Usually yes, per square inch of wall covered, because you pay for one molding and one sheet of glazing instead of six. One large piece also needs one set of fixings and takes twenty minutes rather than an afternoon. The gallery wall wins on flexibility later.
