Frames & Sizing

Best Picture Frames for Puzzles

A completed 1000-piece Ravensburger measures 27 x 20 inches. No stock frame size matches that, which is why most puzzle framing goes wrong before anything is bought.

By · Published

Measure the assembled puzzle first, then buy a made-to-size frame. Craig Frames is the pick because its range extends to non-standard dimensions, and a finished puzzle is almost always a non-standard dimension. A 1000-piece Ravensburger finishes at 27 x 20 inches; the nearest stock sizes are 24x36 and 18x24, and neither of them is close.

If you would rather buy off the shelf, the alternative is a stock frame one size up with a mat cut to bridge the gap. Both routes work. Guessing the size does not.

Measure the puzzle, not the box

Finished puzzle dimensions are set by the die the manufacturer cuts with, and they are not standardized across brands. Ravensburger lists its 1000-piece adult puzzles at 27 x 20 inches. Other manufacturers cut to their own figures, and a 1000-piece puzzle from a different brand can be an inch out in either direction — which is the difference between a frame that closes and a frame that does not.

Measure the assembled puzzle across the widest point in both directions, with a tape laid flat on the table, and write the number down before you shop. Then compare it to the stock sizes.

Glue it, or do not glue it

A framed puzzle needs to behave like a single rigid sheet. There are two ways to get there and they are a genuine fork in the road.

Glue it. Puzzle glue or a sheet of adhesive film bonds the pieces into one panel that can be lifted, slid into a frame and hung. This is permanent: the puzzle will never be taken apart again, and the glue adds a slight sheen to the surface.

Do not glue it. Slide the unglued puzzle onto a backing board, lay the glazing on top, and let the frame itself hold everything in compression. This keeps the puzzle reusable and avoids the sheen, but it only works with a frame that closes tightly and a backing board cut to the frame size. Move the frame carelessly and the puzzle shifts.

Glazing weight and rabbet depth

Two specifications decide whether a puzzle frame works, and neither is the one people check.

Glazing. At 27 x 20 inches, glass is heavy, and the puzzle, backing board and frame are already more mass than a print. Acrylic weighs around half what glass does at the same size, and that difference decides whether the frame hangs on an adhesive fixing or needs a hook into the wall. The full acrylic versus glass comparison covers the trade in both directions.

Rabbet depth. The rabbet is the lip on the inside of the frame that everything stacks into: glazing, puzzle, backing board, and any mat. A puzzle is about 2 mm thick before the backing board goes behind it. Slim contemporary moldings sometimes do not have the depth, and the back panel then sits proud and the clips will not close. Deeper profiles exist for exactly this reason.

If you intend to swap puzzles

Puzzlers who frame one puzzle usually frame another. If the wall is going to show a rotating display, the back-loading frame is the wrong tool — every change means taking the frame down, laying it face down, releasing the clips and reassembling it on the floor.

A snap frame solves this. The aluminum profile hinges open on all four sides from the front, so the contents change while the frame stays on the wall. The compromise is the glazing: snap frames use a thin non-reflective film rather than glass or acrylic, which is fine over a glued puzzle and not enough to compress an unglued one.

The alternative rotating display is no frame at all — glue the puzzle, mount it to a backing board and hang it bare. That is closer to the poster hanger approach and it costs you the protection.

Getting it on the wall

Weigh the finished assembly before choosing a fixing. A 27 x 20 inch frame with acrylic glazing, a backing board and a glued puzzle is heavier than a poster of the same size and lighter than the same frame glazed in glass.

Adhesive strips are plausible at the lighter end: 3M rates Command Large Picture Hanging Strips at 4 lb per set and up to 16 lb using four pairs. Above that, a drywall hook is the honest answer — the OOK Monkey Hook is rated 35 lb on 1/2 inch residential drywall and leaves a pin-sized hole, which is as close to damage-free as a real hook gets. Hanging pictures without studs lists every fixing by rated weight.

Common questions

What size frame do I need for a 1000-piece puzzle?

Measure the finished puzzle rather than assuming. Ravensburger lists its 1000-piece adult puzzles at 27 x 20 inches, and other manufacturers cut to their own dimensions. No common stock frame size matches 27 x 20, so the options are a made-to-size frame or a larger stock frame with a mat cut to the puzzle's dimensions.

Do you have to glue a puzzle before framing it?

No, but you have to choose. Gluing turns the puzzle into a rigid panel that can be handled and slid into any frame, at the cost of a slight surface sheen and the ability to take it apart again. Unglued, the puzzle is held in compression between the glazing and a backing board, which works only in a frame that closes tightly and will shift if the frame is handled roughly.

Should a framed puzzle use glass or acrylic?

Acrylic at puzzle sizes. A 27 x 20 inch frame already carries a puzzle and a backing board, and acrylic weighs roughly half what glass does at the same dimensions. That weight difference is what decides whether the frame can hang on adhesive strips or needs a hook driven into the wall.

Can you hang a framed puzzle with Command strips?

Only if the finished assembly is inside the rating. 3M rates Command Large Picture Hanging Strips at 4 lb per set and up to 16 lb per frame using four pairs. Weigh the frame with the puzzle, backing board and glazing in it before deciding; past that figure, a drywall hook rated 35 lb is the next step and leaves a pin-sized hole.

What is rabbet depth and why does it matter for a puzzle?

The rabbet is the lip inside the frame that the glazing, artwork and backing board all stack into. A puzzle plus a backing board is thicker than a sheet of paper, and a slim contemporary molding may not have the depth to let the back panel close flush. Deeper moldings exist specifically for thicker contents.
