Best Wedding Picture Frames
Wedding photographs arrive as a 5x7, an 8x10 and a handful of 4x6 prints. The frame decision is really a matting decision: how much white space the one print you enlarge is allowed.
By Janet H. · Published

Buy a 16x20 frame matted down to 8x10, not an 8x10 frame. The Kate and Laurel Arendahl set ships two of exactly that, in antique gold, which is the configuration that makes a wedding print read as artwork instead of a photograph on the wall.
A 16x20 frame with an 8x10 opening leaves a mat border of 4 inches on the width and 5 on the height. That is a deliberately generous proportion, and it is the single change that separates a framed wedding photograph from a framed snapshot. If you are buying for the guests rather than for the couple, small picture frames for wedding favors is the bulk version of this decision.

The sizes a wedding actually produces
Almost every wedding print lands on one of five US standard sizes, and the frame decision follows directly from which one you have.
| Print size | What it usually is | Frame it as | Mat border |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4x6 | Lab prints, reception candids | Multi-opening collage frame | Cut into the mat |
| 5x7 | Second-tier favorites, thank-you prints | 8x10 or 11x14 frame, matted | 1.5 in / 3 in |
| 8x10 | The portrait you chose | 16x20 frame, matted | 4 in x 5 in |
| 11x14 | A small enlargement | 16x20 frame, matted | 2.5 in x 3 in |
| 16x20 | The statement enlargement | 20x24 or larger, matted | 2 in |
The pattern is the same at every size: go up one or two frame sizes from the print and let the mat do the work. The full table of standard pairings is in mat sizes for standard prints, and how to mat a print covers cutting one yourself.
Gold, black or wood
Wedding framing leans traditional more often than the rest of a house does, and gold is the reason. A burnished or antique gold molding against a white mat is the conventional answer and it is conventional because it works — warm metal flatters skin tones in a way that cold black does not.
Black is the right choice when the photographs are black and white, or when the rest of the room is already modern and a gold frame would be the only traditional object in it. Natural wood sits between the two and is the safest choice if the frames will later be absorbed into a mixed gallery wall.
Whatever you pick, pick once. Two gold frames and one black one on the same wall reads as an accident, not a mix. Choosing a frame color works through the decision against wall color and print content, and gold picture frames covers the finish specifically.
One frame, a pair, or a wall
A single framed photograph on a large wall looks under-scaled almost regardless of its size. There are three ways to resolve that, in increasing order of commitment.
A pair. Two matched frames hung side by side with 2 to 3 inches between them read as one object twice the width. This is the lowest-effort route to presence and it is why frames are sold in twos.
A set of three to five. A coordinated set in one finish, hung as a planned arrangement. Buy the set rather than assembling it, because a set arrives matched in molding width and depth and an assembled group does not.
A collage frame. Four or five photographs behind one mat in one frame. Right for reception candids at 4x6 and 5x7; wrong for the portrait, which deserves its own frame. Collage picture frames compares the opening layouts.
Buying one as a gift
A frame given at a wedding has a specific problem: the photographs do not exist yet, and the couple's taste in frames is not yours. Three rules make it land.
Buy a tabletop size — 5x7 or 8x10 — because a wall frame commits them to a wall they may not have yet. Buy something that also hangs, so the gift survives a move. And buy the nicer molding rather than the larger size: at tabletop scale the frame is seen from close up, and the detail on the molding is most of what is being given.
If you want the gift to be the photographs rather than the frame, a digital frame is a different and defensible answer — digital picture frames compares them on sharing method and whether a subscription is involved. Other photo-gift options are in gifts for photo lovers.
Engraving the names and the date is the one way to make a frame specific to the day rather than generic — and the one way to make it unreturnable, so the spelling has to be right before you order. Personalized picture frames covers the character limits, the proofing and what to engrave on a wedding frame.
Hanging wedding frames in a rental
A 16x20 frame with real glass is at the point where adhesive becomes a judgement call. 3M rates Command Large Picture Hanging Strips at 4 lb per set and up to 16 lb per frame using four pairs, which is enough for most 16x20 frames with plexiglass glazing and marginal for the same size in glass. Weigh it.
For a pair or a set, use two strip pairs across the top of each frame rather than one. Frames hung on a single fixing rotate out of level, and on a symmetrical pair that is immediately visible. Best picture hanging strips maps strip sizes to frame sizes.

Common questions
What size frame is best for a wedding photo?
Go one or two sizes up from the print and mat the difference. An 8x10 print in a 16x20 frame leaves a mat border of 4 inches on the width and 5 on the height, which is the proportion that makes the photograph read as artwork. A 5x7 print suits an 8x10 or 11x14 frame on the same principle.
Should wedding frames be gold or black?
Gold flatters skin tones and is the conventional choice for color portraits. Black suits black-and-white photographs and modern rooms. Natural wood is the safest if the frames will later join a mixed gallery wall. What matters more than the choice is sticking to it across every frame on the same wall.
What is a good wedding gift frame size?
A tabletop size — 5x7 or 8x10 — that also hangs. The couple may not have the wall yet, and a frame that stands and hangs survives a move. At tabletop scale buy the better molding rather than the larger frame, because the detail is what is being seen.
How do you hang a pair of wedding frames?
Treat the pair as one object. Center the whole arrangement, gaps included, at about 57 inches from the floor and keep 2 to 3 inches between the frames. Use two fixings across the top of each frame rather than one, so neither can rotate out of level — on a symmetrical pair that is immediately obvious.
Can a wedding photo go in a frame without a mat?
It can, and at 16x20 and above it often should, because a large print already has presence. Below that, a mat is doing two useful jobs at once: it makes the framed object larger than the photograph, and it holds the paper off the glazing, which is the condition that protects a print in the long run.
