The thing most gift guides skip: a frame is only half a present. Either fill it before you wrap it, or pick a size the recipient already has photos printed at.

The sizes that are safe to guess
You are buying without knowing what they will put in it, so buy a size that photo labs actually print to:

Digital frames: one question decides it
A digital frame is the right gift for someone whose photos live on a phone and always will. But check one thing before buying:
Will the recipient install an app? If not, buy a frame with a per-frame email address — anyone can email a photo to it, including relatives who will never set up an account. If they are comfortable with apps, an app-based frame gives better control and usually no subscription.
If they rent
Most people under about forty are renting, and a frame they cannot hang is a frame they will lean against a skirting board for a year.
