Best Round Picture Frames
Round frames are sold by diameter, not by print size, which means the frame decides what gets cut off your photograph. Choose the crop first and the finish second.
By Janet H. · Published

For one circle on a wall, buy the alblinsy 8 inch round wood frame: it is the size that reads as a deliberate accent rather than a dot, the finish is a flat black that sits next to rectangular frames without competing, and it costs less than a standard 8x10. For three, buy them as a matched set so the diameters and the finish agree.
The thing to settle before you order is the crop. A circle keeps only the middle of a rectangular print, so the frame diameter and the photograph have to be chosen together — which is why this page starts with the cropping table rather than the picks.

Round, oval and round collage: three different purchases
These share a search term and almost nothing else. The crop is different, the tradition behind each is different, and they suit different rooms.
| Shape | Sized by | What it suits | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Circular wall frame | Diameter, in inches | A square-ish crop of one subject - a face, a plant, a landscape middle | Beside rectangles as an accent, or in a run of three |
| Oval frame | The rectangular photo it accepts, e.g. 8x10 | A single portrait, head and shoulders | A hallway, a mantel, a tabletop - the traditional portrait format |
| Round collage frame | Overall diameter, plus the openings inside | Eight or nine small photos arranged as one object | One fixing in the wall where a gallery wall will not fit |
| Open-back round canvas frame | Diameter, no glazing | A round canvas or a painted panel, not a photograph | A specialist purchase - it ships without glass or a backing board |
An oval frame quotes the rectangular print size it accepts, which makes it far easier to shop for than a circle. An 8x10 oval frame takes a standard 8x10 photo and masks the corners — no reprinting, no cropping decision.
The crop: what a circle actually does to your photo
This is the part that surprises people. A circular frame has a circular opening, so the widest square you can fit inside an 8 inch circle is about 5.65 inches on a side. Everything outside that circle is gone, including all four corners of any rectangular print. Plan the crop before you order the frame, not after it arrives.
| Frame diameter | Visible circle | Print to start from | What survives |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 in | 6 in across | A 5x7 or 4x6, cropped square | One face, or one object - nothing with context |
| 8 in | 8 in across | An 8x10 or a square phone export | A head and shoulders, or a single plant or building |
| 10 in | 10 in across | An 8x10 or 11x14 | A seated figure, or a landscape with a strong center |
| 12 in | 12 in across | An 11x14 or larger | Two people, or a landscape - the first size with room to breathe |
| 20 to 22 in | 20 to 22 in across | A 16x20 or a large digital file | A statement piece; needs real resolution behind it |
If the photograph you have will not take the crop, the honest answer is a rectangular frame. The picture frame sizes chart has the standard ladder, and what size wall art to buy covers scaling a piece to the wall it is going on.
The four specifications that decide it
Round frame listings are thin on detail, so these are the fields to look for and the ones to assume the worst about when they are missing:
- Diameter, and whether it is the frame or the opening. Some listings quote the outer diameter of the molding, others the visible circle. On a frame with a wide face the difference is over an inch. If the listing gives one number only, assume it is the outer diameter and that the visible circle is smaller.
- Glazing. Real glass, acrylic, or nothing at all. Round frames at the budget end frequently ship with a thin acrylic sheet, which is the right choice for anything going on adhesive. A 20 inch circle with real glass is a heavy object, and open-back canvas frames ship with no glazing whatsoever — check before you assume a photograph is protected.
- Depth, if the thing inside has any. A round frame intended for canvas is deeper than one intended for paper. A paper print in a deep round frame sinks and shadows at the edge.
- The hanging hardware, which on a circle matters more than on a rectangle. A rectangle hung from one point is held level by gravity pulling on a straight top edge. A circle has no straight edge, so a single central hanger lets the frame rotate freely — and any pattern or writing inside it will drift off true. Two hangers, or a flat cleat, is what stops that.
Hanging a circle so it looks level
A crooked rectangle is obvious and easy to nudge straight. A circle is worse in both directions: nothing tells you it is rotated until the content inside gives it away, and nothing holds it where you put it.
- Two fixings, not one. Two hangers an inch or two either side of the center stop rotation completely. Several round frames ship with two sawtooth hangers for exactly this reason; if yours came with one, add a second.
- Mark the center, not the top. Measure to where the middle of the circle should sit — the standard center height of 57 to 60 inches from the floor applies to a circle the same as anything else. Then work outward to the hanger positions. How high to hang art has the arithmetic.
- Adhesive strips work, with a caveat. A pair of strips top left and top right of the back will hold a light round frame and resist rotation. Check the assembled weight against the published strip limits first; a 20 inch circle with glass is usually past what adhesive should be asked to do.
- Felt pads help. Two small adhesive felt dots at the bottom of the back keep the frame from swinging flat against the wall and drifting. Cheap, and the single most effective fix for a circle that keeps going crooked.
For a large circle in a rental, hanging without finding a stud covers the no-stud hooks that take the weight from one small hole, and the heavy-mirror method applies to anything over about 20 inches with glass in it.
Putting a circle on a gallery wall
A round frame is the cheapest way to stop a wall of rectangles looking like a spreadsheet. It is also the easiest way to wreck one. The difference is whether the circle is doing a job.
| Arrangement | How to do it | Why it works |
|---|---|---|
| One circle, many rectangles | A single round frame placed off-center in the group | Breaks the grid at one point - the circle reads as punctuation |
| A vertical run of three circles | Three identical diameters, equal gaps, in a narrow space | The best answer for a slim wall between a door and a corner |
| Circles at the ends | Round frames closing both ends of a horizontal row | Softens the line without disturbing the middle |
| Circles throughout, mixed diameters | Six to nine circles, varied sizes, tight spacing | Reads as a collection - needs enough pieces or it looks scattered |
Spacing a circle is different too. Measure gaps between the edges at the closest point, not between bounding boxes, or the circle will look adrift from its neighbors. Gallery wall layouts and spacing has the gap numbers, and matching versus mixed frames covers how much finish variation the wall can carry once a shape is already varying.
Oval frames: the easier version of the same idea
An oval frame solves the problem a circle creates. It quotes a rectangular photo size, accepts that print as it is, and masks the corners — so you get the softened shape without reprinting anything.
| Round frame | Oval frame | |
|---|---|---|
| Sized by | Diameter in inches | The rectangular print it takes, e.g. 8x10 |
| Your existing print | Needs a square crop | Fits as it is |
| Suits | Objects, landscapes, one centered face | Portraits - the proportions follow a head and shoulders |
| Finishes available | Mostly flat modern black, white and wood | Mostly antique gold, bronze and black with gilt trim |
| Reads as | Contemporary | Traditional, often deliberately so |
Because the oval shelf runs heavily to antique finishes, the scale rule from vintage picture frames applies: an ornate oval molding is wide, so a frame that accepts an 8x10 occupies considerably more wall than a plain 8x10 does. Measure the outer dimension, not the opening.
Where round frames go wrong
The category has a consistent set of problems, and most of them are shopping problems rather than product problems:
- Listings quote one number and mean either thing. Outer diameter and visible opening are used interchangeably across the category. If a size matters to you, pick a listing that states both, or allow an inch.
- Much of the shelf is unbranded. Round frames come overwhelmingly from sellers with no catalog and no history, which means the frame you liked may be gone in six months when you want a second one. If the plan is a run of three, buy all three now, in one order.
- “Round frame” sometimes means no glass and no back. Open-back circles sold for canvas look identical in a thumbnail and arrive as a bare ring. Read the glazing line.
- Rotation. Covered above, and the most common complaint in the category. One central hanger plus a circle equals a frame that will not stay put.
- Thin acrylic distorts at a large diameter. A 20 inch acrylic sheet in a shallow rabbet can bow slightly and throw a visible ripple across the photograph. Real glass does not, at the cost of weight — acrylic versus glass covers the trade honestly.
- Resolution shows. A 20 inch circle crops a rectangular file hard and then enlarges what is left. A phone photo that looked fine at 8x10 can go soft at this size. Start from the largest original you have.

Common questions
What size round picture frame should I buy?
Eight inches for a single accent beside rectangular frames, 12 inches when the photo needs room for two people or a landscape, and 20 inches or more when the circle is meant to be the main piece on the wall. Round frames are sold by diameter, not by print size, so the frame determines the crop rather than the other way around.
Will my 8x10 photo fit a round frame?
Only cropped. A circular opening keeps the inscribed circle and discards all four corners, so an 8 inch circle shows roughly the middle 5.65 inch square of whatever you put behind it. Crop the photo square on your phone first and check the subject survives. An 8x10 oval frame is the alternative - it takes the print as it is and masks only the corners.
Why does my round frame keep hanging crooked?
Because a circle has no straight top edge for gravity to level. A single central hanger lets the frame rotate freely. Fit two hangers an inch or two either side of center, or use two adhesive strips at the top corners of the back, and add two small felt dots at the bottom so the frame cannot drift against the wall.
Can you get a round frame with a mat?
Rarely off the shelf, because a circular mat opening needs a specialist cutter. Almost every affordable round frame is a full-bleed circle with no border. A framer can cut a circular or oval mat opening to order, which is the point at which a custom frame starts to make sense.
What is the difference between a round frame and an oval frame?
A round frame is sized by diameter and crops a square from your print, which suits objects, centered landscapes and single faces. An oval frame is sized by the rectangular print it accepts - an 8x10 oval takes a standard 8x10 - and is proportioned for a portrait. Round frames are mostly modern finishes; oval frames are mostly antique ones.
Can a round frame hang on adhesive strips?
A light one, yes - put a pair of strips at the top left and top right of the back, which also stops the frame rotating. Weigh the assembled frame and check it against the manufacturer's published limits. A 20 inch circle with real glass is usually past what adhesive should be asked to hold and wants a no-stud hook instead.
