IKEA Picture Frames: Sizes and Alternatives
Half of IKEA's frame range is sized in centimeters with the inches rounded off. That is the single thing worth knowing before you buy one, and it decides whether your print will fit.
By Janet H. · Published

Buy the IKEA frame only if the size on the label is a true US size — 4x6, 5x7, 8x10, 12x16, 16x20, 18x24 or 24x36. Everything listed as 19¾x27½ or 27½x39¼ inches is a centimeter size with the inches rounded off, and a US print will not fill it. If your art is one of those metric sizes, Craig Frames is the mail-order answer, because it cuts to the dimension you ask for.
Worth knowing before you go: searching IKEA's US site for RIBBA today returns RÖDALM frames. RIBBA is the name most gallery-wall articles still use, and it is no longer what IKEA sells here.

What IKEA actually sells in the US right now
Frame lines at IKEA turn over faster than the internet's advice about them does. The table below is what came back from a search of ikea.com/us on 17 October 2026 — line name, what it is, and the sizes listed against it.
| IKEA line | What it is | Listed sizes seen |
|---|---|---|
| RÖDALM | The main current frame line, in plain and multi-opening versions | 12x16, 24x36, 19¾x27½, 27½x39¼; multi-picture versions at 18x24, 21¾x11, 30x13¾, 25¼x28 |
| FISKBO | The cheapest plain frame, in true US photo sizes | 4x6, 5x7, 8x10 |
| KNOPPÄNG | Thin-profile frame, also sold with a poster already in it | 19¾x27½, 24x35¾, 16¼x20 |
| LOMVIKEN | Metal-look frame with a heavier profile | 16x20, 12½x12½ |
| SANNAHED | Square frames with a deep front edge | 9¾x9¾, 19¾x19¾ |
| SILVERHÖJDEN, EDSBRUK, DALSKÄRR, TRIVIALSKOG | Wider or painted moldings at a step up from the basic lines | 19¾x27½, 16x20, 8x10, 5x7 |
| VÄXBO | Collage frame for eight photos | 5x7 openings |
The centimeter problem, in plain numbers
IKEA is a Swedish company and its frames were drawn in metric. In the US the listings convert those dimensions to inches, which is why the range contains sizes nobody in America prints to. 19¾x27½ inches is 50x70 cm. 27½x39¼ is 70x100 cm. 19¾x19¾ is 50x50 cm, and 9¾x9¾ is 25x25 cm.
| IKEA listed size | What it really is | Nearest US standard | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|
| 19¾ x 27½ in | 50 x 70 cm | 18 x 24 in | Print is 1¾ x 3½ in too small |
| 27½ x 39¼ in | 70 x 100 cm | 24 x 36 in | Print is 3½ x 3¼ in too small |
| 19¾ x 19¾ in | 50 x 50 cm | 20 x 20 in | Print is ¼ in too large each way |
| 9¾ x 9¾ in | 25 x 25 cm | 10 x 10 in | Print is ¼ in too large each way |
| 24 x 35¾ in | 60 x 90 cm | 24 x 36 in | Print is ¼ in too long |
A quarter inch sounds survivable. It is not, in either direction: a print that is a quarter inch too large will not go in at all, and one that is too small leaves a gap of bare backing board along two edges. The honest fix for a metric frame is a mat, cut so its outer dimension matches the frame and its window matches your print — the mat sizing table has the standard pairs, and how to mat a print covers cutting one to an odd outer size.
Where IKEA genuinely wins
Three things, and they are real. The low end of the range is extremely cheap for a frame that includes glazing and a backing board, which makes IKEA the sane choice for a dorm wall or a rental you will leave. The moldings are consistent: buy six of the same line two years apart and they still match, which matters more on a gallery wall than any single frame's quality does. And the square sizes are easier to find at IKEA than almost anywhere else.
Two things it does not do. It does not cut to size, so a non-standard piece of art has no answer in the range at all. And you have to physically go and get it, or pay shipping on something fragile — which is where the mail-order brands take the decision back.
What to buy instead, by situation
The picks below map onto the four reasons people search for an IKEA alternative: the size does not exist in the range, there is no store within reach, the gallery wall needs matching frames in one delivery, or the frame has to go up without a drill.
| Your situation | What IKEA gives you | Better answer |
|---|---|---|
| Art is a non-standard size | Nothing — the range is fixed sizes only | Craig Frames, which lists made-to-size alongside its standard range |
| No store within driving distance | Shipping on a glazed frame | Americanflat or upsimples, shipped with shatter-resistant plexiglass |
| Six matching frames for a gallery wall | Works, if the line is still stocked in every size you need | A single matched gallery set, delivered together with hardware |
| Renting, cannot drill | Frames only — hardware is a separate aisle | A plexiglass frame plus rated adhesive strips, sized to the frame's weight |
If the whole appeal was the price rather than the brand, the comparison you actually want is best cheap picture frames, which looks at where a budget frame saves money and which of those savings you will notice.
Getting an IKEA frame onto a rented wall
IKEA frames in the smaller sizes are light, because the glazing on the cheap lines is plastic rather than glass. That puts most of them comfortably inside adhesive territory: 3M rates Command Large Picture Hanging Strips at 4 lb per set and up to 16 lb using four pairs. The larger lines with real glass are a different matter — weigh the frame before you trust a strip with it.
One IKEA-specific catch: several of the lines ship with a hook or a keyhole slot on the back rather than a sawtooth hanger, and a few of the plastic-backed frames have no fixed hanger at all. Adhesive strips need a flat, rigid back to bond to, so check what you are sticking to before you commit. Hanging pictures without nails ranks every no-drill method by its rated weight, and best picture hanging strips maps the strip sizes onto frame sizes.

Common questions
Does IKEA still sell RIBBA frames?
A search for RIBBA on IKEA's US site returns RÖDALM frames rather than RIBBA. RÖDALM is the main current frame line in the US range, in plain and multi-opening versions. Older gallery-wall guides that specify RIBBA sizes should be checked against what IKEA currently lists before you shop from them.
Are IKEA frame sizes standard in the US?
Some are and some are not. FISKBO at 4x6, 5x7 and 8x10, and RÖDALM at 12x16 and 24x36, are true US sizes. Sizes listed as 19¾x27½, 27½x39¼, 19¾x19¾ and 9¾x9¾ inches are conversions of 50x70 cm, 70x100 cm, 50x50 cm and 25x25 cm, and no US-printed photograph is cut to those dimensions.
What size print fits a 50x70 cm IKEA frame?
A 50x70 cm frame measures 19¾ x 27½ inches, so the nearest US print size of 18x24 inches leaves a gap of about 1¾ inches on the width and 3½ inches on the height. The fix is a mat cut to 19¾ x 27½ inches on the outside with an 18x24 window, which fills the frame and borders the print at the same time.
Can you hang IKEA frames with Command strips?
Usually yes for the smaller plexiglass-glazed sizes. 3M rates Command Large Picture Hanging Strips at 4 lb per set and up to 16 lb per frame using four pairs. Check that the frame back is flat and rigid where the strip will sit — some of the cheaper lines have a thin plastic back or a keyhole fitting rather than a flat panel.
What is the cheapest IKEA picture frame?
FISKBO is the entry line, sold in 4x6, 5x7 and 8x10. It is a plain frame with plastic glazing and a backing board and no mat. For the same job delivered rather than collected, a plexiglass-glazed multi-pack from a mail-order brand is the closest equivalent.
