Frames & Sizing

Best 11x14 Picture Frames

11x14 is the first frame size that reads as wall art rather than as a photograph. Most people should buy it matted down to an 8x10.

By · Published

A matted picture frame with a wide white border leaning on a shelf

Buy an 11x14 with an 8x10 mat opening. It is the most common matted pairing sold, it gives roughly a 1.5 inch border, and an 8x10 print inside it reads considerably more finished than the same print in an 8x10 frame. The Golden State Art matted line is the pick if the mat matters; Americanflat if you want the mat removable.

If you are buying several for a wall, buy a matched pack from one line in one order. Across two lines the mat whites will not match, and that is the one mismatch that shows.

Why 11x14 is the size to own

11x14 sits at the point where a frame stops being a tabletop object and starts being a thing on a wall. Below it, a single frame on a bare wall looks lost. At 11x14 one frame can hold a wall on its own, and the format is stocked everywhere in every finish.

16x20A statementYes, and dominates a small wall11x14
18x24A posterYes, needs wall around it12x18
The step-down column is why 11x14 is the most flexible size: it holds the most common print size with a proper border.

The whole size ladder is in the frame sizes chart, and the 8x10 roundup covers the size below if you want the print to fill the frame instead.

Matted to 8x10, or plain 11x14

This is the only real decision, and it depends entirely on what print you are putting in it.

  • Buy matted if you have an 8x10 photograph or print. The mat holds the paper off the glazing so it cannot stick in a humid room, gives the eye a rest between image and molding, and makes a cheap print read as a considered one.
  • Buy plain if you have an actual 11x14 print, or if the artwork fills its paper edge to edge and a border would cut into the composition.

For a wider border than 1.5 inches, go up to a 16x20 frame with an 11x14 opening, or buy a separate pre-cut mat. The full mat matrix has every stocked pair, and the matted frame roundup covers the acid-free question.

Glazing and weight at this size

11x14 is the last size where glass is a comfortable choice. Above it, weight starts to dictate; below it, nothing dictates anything.

GlazingAt 11x14Hangs fromBuy it when
Plexiglass / acrylicLight enough to ignoreOne pair of large adhesive stripsIt is going on strips, going above a bed, or there are children
Real glassNoticeable but manageableTwo pairs of large strips, or one rated hookIt sits at eye level and will never be moved
Both work at 11x14. At 16x20 and above, only acrylic does.

The glazing comparison covers scratch resistance and optical flatness, and the published strip ratings tell you how many pairs a given frame needs.

Buying several for a wall

11x14 is the most popular size for a matched gallery wall, because five of them in a row or a grid fills a standard wall without any sizing arithmetic.

Two things to get right:

  1. Buy them in one order from one line. Mat whites differ between manufacturers — one is bright white, the next is ivory — and on a grid that difference is the first thing anyone notices.
  2. Decide the spacing before you hang anything. Five 11x14 frames at 2 inch gaps span 63 inches. At 3 inch gaps they span 67. Measure the wall first.

The exact spacing numbers are here, and frame sizes that add up has the arithmetic for mixed-size walls.

The 11x14 that holds five photographs

An 11x14 collage frame has a single mat cut with five 4x6 openings, so it hangs from one fixing and holds five photographs. For a renter who can only put one thing on a wall, that ratio is hard to beat.

The trade is that the layout is fixed. You cannot rearrange it, and a gap shows if you only have four photographs. If you want to keep adding over time, five separate 11x14 frames is the format that allows it.

The collage frame roundup covers the opening layouts each one offers.

Common questions

What size print fits an 11x14 frame?

An 11x14 print if the frame is plain, or an 8x10 print if the frame is matted. The 11x14 to 8x10 step-down is the most commonly stocked matted pairing and gives a border of roughly 1.5 inches on each side.

Is 11x14 a good size for wall art?

It is the smallest size that reads as wall art rather than as a photograph, and it can hold a small wall on its own. It is also the most flexible size to own, because it takes the most common print size - 8x10 - with a proper mat border.

What does 11x14 matted to 8x10 mean?

An 11x14 frame with a mat whose opening is cut for an 8x10 print, leaving about 1.5 inches of border on each side. Watch for listings that quote only one of the two numbers, because the two readings are three inches apart in each direction.

How many 11x14 frames fit on a wall?

Five in a row at 2 inch gaps span 63 inches; at 3 inch gaps they span 67 inches. Measure the usable wall width first and leave clear wall at each end rather than running the arrangement to the edges.

Can an 11x14 frame hang on Command strips?

Yes. With plexiglass glazing one pair of large strips is usually enough; with real glass, use two pairs. Weigh the frame on a kitchen scale and check it against the published per-frame maximum rather than estimating from the listing.
