Best Wall Art for a Gaming Room
A gaming wall has a problem no other wall has: it is lit from the front by colored light. That rules out glazing before it rules out anything else.
By Janet H. · Published

Buy canvas or peel-and-stick, not anything behind glass. Glazing in a room with RGB lighting and a bright monitor reflects both, and you end up looking at your own screen in the artwork. Framed canvas has no glazing at all, which solves it outright.
Then size to the desk, not the wall: art roughly the width of the desk or monitor arm, hung so its bottom edge clears the top of the monitor by a few inches. Anything higher is out of frame when you are sitting down, which is where you always are.

The reflection problem, and the two formats that solve it
Every other room in the house is lit from above by one or two warm sources. A gaming room is lit from the front by a monitor and from behind by colored strips, which is close to the worst case for anything with a sheet of glazing over it.
| Format | Reflects the setup? | Weight | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Framed print behind glass | Badly — mirrors the monitor and the RGB | Heaviest | Avoid on the wall behind or beside the screen |
| Framed print behind acrylic | Somewhat less, but still a specular surface | Medium | Acceptable on a side wall, not behind the desk |
| Framed canvas | No — the surface is matte and textured | Light, no glazing | The default choice here |
| Peel-and-stick decal or mural | No | Effectively none | Best when the wall is rented or the whole wall is the artwork |
Size it to the desk, not the room
A gaming wall is viewed from one fixed seated position, which makes it the easiest wall in the house to size correctly — and the one most often sized as if people will stand in front of it.
| Desk width | Art width | Bottom edge sits | Format that fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| 48 in | 32 - 36 in | 4 - 6 in above the monitor top | One 24x36 landscape |
| 60 in | 40 - 45 in | 4 - 6 in above the monitor top | One 30x40, or three 12x16 |
| 72 in | 48 - 54 in | 6 in above the monitor top | One 36x48, or a 3-piece set |
| Dual monitors on arms | Skip the wall behind | — | Put the art on the side wall instead |
The general rules are on how high to hang art and sizing above furniture; this wall overrides the standing-eye-level part of both.
When the wall itself is the artwork
Peel-and-stick wallpaper or a mural behind the desk is the one approach that works with the lighting rather than against it: a matte printed surface takes colored light and holds it, where a framed piece interrupts it.
Two practical constraints. It needs a smooth painted wall — the manufacturers are explicit that these products are for smooth surfaces, not textured ones. And it wants to go on the wall the lighting washes, which is usually the one directly behind the monitor. Peel-and-stick art and decals versus wallpaper cover the choice.
If the wall is textured, none of this works and a framed canvas is the fallback: hanging on textured walls.
Doing it in a room you do not own
Most gaming setups are in rented rooms, which is the constraint that decides the fixings. Framed canvas is light because there is no glazing, so adhesive strips handle it: 3M rates a set of Command Large Picture Hanging Strips at 4 lb, and up to four sets on one frame for 16 lb.
Two warnings specific to this room. Adhesive needs paint that has fully cured — 3M recommends waiting a week after painting — and it will not hold on a textured or papered surface. If the wall behind the desk is already wallpapered, adhesive is out entirely: hanging pictures on wallpaper. No-drill hanging kits covers the rest.

Common questions
What wall art works best in a gaming room?
Framed canvas or peel-and-stick, because both are matte. A gaming room is lit from the front by a monitor and from behind by colored strips, so anything behind glass or acrylic reflects the setup back at you. Canvas has no glazing at all, which removes the problem rather than reducing it.
How high should art go above a gaming desk?
So the bottom edge clears the top of the monitor by about 4 to 6 inches — measured at the monitor's highest tilt, not where it sits now. You view this wall from a fixed seated position, so the usual standing eye-level rule puts the art too high to see.
What size art goes above a gaming setup?
Roughly two-thirds to three-quarters of the desk width. A 60 inch desk wants art around 40 to 45 inches wide, which is one 30x40 piece or three 12x16 panels. With dual monitors on arms, put the art on a side wall instead — the wall behind will be covered.
Can you put wall art up in a rented gaming room?
Yes. Framed canvas is light because it has no glazing, and 3M rates a set of Command Large Picture Hanging Strips at 4 lb with up to four sets per frame for 16 lb. The paint has to be fully cured first — 3M recommends waiting a week after painting — and the wall must be smooth rather than textured or papered.
Does peel-and-stick wallpaper work behind a desk?
On a smooth painted wall, yes, and it is the one format that works with colored lighting rather than against it, because a matte printed surface holds the light instead of reflecting it. The manufacturers specify smooth surfaces, so a textured wall rules it out.
