How Much Does a Gallery Wall Cost?
A gallery wall has no price, it has a formula. Four numbers decide it, and the one most people get wrong is the frame count.
By Janet H. · Published

The cost of a gallery wall is frame count multiplied by frame cost, plus art, plus hardware. Frame count is the lever that matters, because it multiplies everything: going from nine frames to five cuts the frame bill, the art bill and the hardware bill at the same time.
The cheapest real gallery wall is a matched multi-pack of frames filled with images you supply, hung on adhesive strips. The most expensive is nine individually chosen framed pieces at mixed sizes. Both are gallery walls. The difference between them is a factor of several, and none of it is about taste.

The four multipliers
Every gallery wall budget decomposes into the same four variables. Work out yours before shopping and the number stops being a surprise.
| Variable | Range | Effect on total | Where to compromise |
|---|---|---|---|
| Frame count | 3 to 12 pieces | Multiplies everything else | Fewer, larger frames — the single biggest saving |
| Frame size | 5x7 through 24x36 | Cost rises faster than area, because glazing does | Mix: one large anchor and several small frames |
| Glazing | Plexiglass, glass, or none | Often the largest component of a frame's cost and nearly all of its weight | Plexiglass, or canvas with no glazing at all |
| Art | Supplied by you, bought unframed, or included | Zero to more than the frames | Supply your own; print to standard sizes |
| Hardware | One to four fixings per frame | Small per frame, real across nine | Count it before you buy — it is the forgotten line |
Why frame count is the lever
A nine-frame grid and a five-frame arrangement can cover a similar area of wall, because the five-frame version uses larger pieces and wider gaps. But the nine-frame version needs nine frames, nine images, nine sets of fixings and nine measurements.
Cost is not the only argument. Nine frames is nine chances to hang something crooked, and a grid is unforgiving about it — the eye reads a row of tops as a line and catches a frame that is a quarter inch off. Five frames in a looser arrangement hides the same error completely. Grid versus salon style covers which layout tolerates what.
The extreme version of this argument is one large piece instead of a group, which is cheaper than almost any multi-frame wall and takes twenty minutes to hang. Gallery wall versus one large piece makes the case for both sides.
Where the money actually goes inside a frame
A picture frame is molding, glazing, a mat, a backing board and hardware. The molding is usually not the expensive part. Glazing is — it rises steeply with area, it is heavy, and it is the component that makes shipping cost what it does.
Three consequences follow. Plexiglass-glazed frames are cheaper and lighter than glass at the same size, which also widens your hanging options. A canvas has no glazing, no mat and no backing board, which is why covering a large area with canvas costs less than framing the same area. And a matted frame costs more than an unmatted one at the same outer size, while covering less wall with image.
None of which means buy the cheapest frame. Best cheap picture frames is about which savings you will notice and which you will not.
Three ways to cut the total
Supply the art. Images are the component most easily reduced to zero. Your own photographs, or public-domain works from museum open-access collections, cost a print. The cheapest way to get wall art covers where those collections are and how to print from them.
Buy frames as a pack. Lower per frame, and matched. Picture frames in bulk runs the comparison for packs of four to twelve.
Print to standard sizes. 8x10, 11x14, 16x20, 18x24 and 24x36 are the sizes frames are mass produced in. Anything else needs a custom frame or a cut mat, and either one can cost more than the print. The frame sizes chart has them all, and frame sizes for gallery walls covers which combinations work together.
Budgeting the hardware properly
Work the hardware out per frame and then multiply, because that is where the number surprises people. 3M rates Command Large Picture Hanging Strips at 4 lb per set and up to 16 lb per frame using four pairs, so a heavier frame consumes several pairs on its own.
Weigh the heaviest frame in the set, work out how many pairs it needs, assume the rest need at least two pairs each for stability rather than for load, and buy accordingly. Running out halfway through hanging a wall is the most annoying way to lose an evening. Hanging a gallery wall without nails has the per-frame method, and best picture hanging strips lists the ratings by size.

Common questions
What determines the cost of a gallery wall?
Four multipliers: how many frames, how large they are, what the glazing is, and whether you supply the art or buy it. Frame count matters most because it multiplies every other line, including the hardware. A fifth line — fixings — is small per frame and significant across nine of them.
Is it cheaper to buy a gallery wall frame set or individual frames?
A set, on both counts. A multi-pack costs less per frame than the same frames bought individually, and it arrives matched in finish, molding width and depth. Frames assembled one at a time over months rarely match, and the mismatch is the most common reason a finished gallery wall looks wrong.
How can I make a gallery wall cheaper?
Use fewer, larger frames; buy the frames as a matched pack; and supply the images yourself, printed to a standard size. Public-domain works from museum open-access collections and your own photographs both reduce the art line to the cost of printing, which is usually the easiest component to cut to near zero.
What is the most expensive part of a framed picture?
Usually the glazing. It costs more as area increases, it accounts for most of the frame's weight, and it drives the shipping cost. That is why plexiglass-glazed frames are cheaper and lighter than glass at the same size, and why a canvas — which has no glazing, mat or backing board — covers a large wall for less.
How much hardware does a gallery wall need?
Count it per frame and multiply. 3M rates Command Large Picture Hanging Strips at 4 lb per set and up to 16 lb per frame using four pairs, so heavier frames consume several pairs each. Allow at least two pairs per frame even where one would carry the load, because a frame on a single fixing rotates out of level.
