Best Picture Frames for Family Photos
The problem with family photographs is never one photograph. It is thirty of them in four sizes, half of them irreplaceable, and a wall that has to hold the lot without looking like a noticeboard.
By Janet H. · Published

Start with one matched mixed-size set rather than individual frames. The Frametory Aluminum Gallery Wall Frame Set ships seven frames — one 11x14, two 8x10 and four 5x7 — which is almost exactly the size mix a box of family photographs contains.
The second decision matters more than the frames: anything printed before digital is a physical original with no backup, and it should sit behind an acid-free mat rather than pressed against glazing. That is the difference between a photograph that lasts and one that sticks to the glass.

Four sizes, one wall
A family photo collection is not a curated set. It is school portraits at 5x7, prints from a lab at 4x6, a wedding enlargement at 8x10 or 11x14, and somewhere in the box a square print from a camera nobody can name. Hanging those as individual frames in their native sizes produces a wall that reads as clutter, because nothing lines up with anything.
There are only three ways out, and they are all legitimate.
| Approach | How it works | Best when |
|---|---|---|
| Matched mixed-size set | One finish across several sizes, hung as a planned arrangement | You have a mix of sizes and a reasonably large wall |
| Multi-opening collage frame | Several photos behind one mat in a single frame | You have many photographs at one size — usually 4x6 or 5x7 |
| Mat everything up to one size | Different photos, same outer frame dimension, different mat windows | You want a grid, and the photographs are different sizes |
Protecting prints you cannot reprint
Anything printed before roughly 2005 is likely to be the only copy. Three rules apply, and they are the same rules conservation framers use for works on paper.
Never dry-mount or tape it down. Adhesive mounting is irreversible and the tape yellows into the paper. Hinge it at the top edge or use photo corners, both of which let the print be removed again.
Use acid-free board. Non-archival mat board discolors over time and transfers a line onto the print along the bevel. Listings that state acid-free, 4-ply, pH-neutral or lignin-free are telling you the thing you need to know.
Keep the print off the glazing. A mat is a spacer as well as a border. Without it, paper pressed against glass can stick permanently in a humid room — which is also why a bathroom is the wrong place for an irreplaceable photograph. Frames for a bathroom covers that case.
Collage frame or separate frames
A multi-opening collage frame is one fixing, one object to level, and a mat that does the alignment for you. For a dozen 4x6 prints it is unambiguously the right answer, and it is cheaper than a dozen frames.
It has two real costs. Changing one photograph means taking the whole frame off the wall and opening the back, which is why the frames with a rotating spring plate rather than bendable tabs are worth seeking out. And the arrangement is fixed forever: you cannot add a thirteenth photograph without buying another frame.
Separate frames cost more and take longer to hang, but they grow. If the wall is going to accumulate photographs for the next ten years, buy separate frames in one finish. Collage picture frames compares the multi-opening layouts, and matching versus mixed frames covers whether the finishes have to agree.
Laying the wall out before you make a single hole
Lay every frame on the floor first, in the arrangement you intend, and photograph it from directly above. Then cut paper templates to each frame's outer size, tape them to the wall, and live with them for a day. This is free, it is reversible, and it is the step people skip.
Two numbers to work to: center the whole arrangement at about 57 inches from the floor, treating the group as one piece, and keep the gaps between frames consistent at 2 to 3 inches. Gallery wall layouts and spacing has the full method, and gallery wall templates has to-scale diagrams for the common frame counts.
If drilling is not an option, the whole arrangement can go up on adhesive — check each frame's weight against the rated figures in hanging a gallery wall without nails.

Common questions
What size frames are best for family photos?
Most family photographs are 4x6, 5x7 or 8x10, and an enlargement is usually 11x14 or 16x20. A mixed-size set covering 5x7 through 11x14 handles the majority of a collection, and anything smaller is better grouped into a multi-opening collage frame than hung on its own.
Do family photos need acid-free mats?
Any print you cannot reproduce should sit behind acid-free board. Non-archival mat board discolors over time and transfers a line onto the print along the bevel edge. Listings describe the right material as acid-free, 4-ply, pH-neutral or lignin-free.
Should family photo frames all match?
They have to agree on something, not everything. Matching the frame finish across the whole wall is the easiest version. Matching the mat color while letting the moldings vary also works, and is what lets you fold in a frame you already own. What fails is varying both at once.
Is a collage frame better than separate frames?
For many photographs at one size, yes — it is one fixing, one object to level, and the mat does the alignment for you. For a wall that will keep growing, no: a collage frame is fixed at the number of openings it was cut for, while separate frames in a single finish can be added to for years.
Can you hang family photos without putting holes in the wall?
Yes, within the weight rating of the fixing. 3M rates Command Large Picture Hanging Strips at 4 lb per set and up to 16 lb per frame using four pairs, which covers most small and medium frames with plexiglass glazing. Frames with real glass at 11x14 and above should be weighed first.
