Buy something with a wipeable surface — glazed, or vinyl — and keep it at least a couple of meters from the hob. Airborne cooking oil settles as a fine film on every surface within range, and it is sticky rather than dusty, so it collects dust on top of itself.
Unglazed canvas in a kitchen is the one combination to avoid. It cannot be wiped, and within a year it holds a residue you cannot get out.

The walls a kitchen actually has
Kitchens are short on wall. Between upper cabinets, splashbacks, windows and appliances, what remains is usually small and awkwardly shaped — which determines the answer more than taste does.
- The end of a run of cabinets. A narrow vertical strip. One tall portrait piece, or two small ones stacked.
- Above a doorway or a pass-through. Wide and short. A landscape piece or a row of three small frames.
- The breakfast-nook wall. Usually the only proper wall in the room, and far enough from the hob to relax about format. Treat it like a dining room wall.
- The back of an island. Often overlooked, and visible from the living area in an open plan.
Scale down, and keep it small
A kitchen is viewed from close range while you are doing something else. It does not want a statement piece and rarely has room for one.
8x10 and 11x14 are the working sizes here, and a group of three small frames on a short wall usually reads better than one medium piece filling it. Keep frames slim: a deep molding in a small kitchen catches sleeves and shows grease along its top edge.
Hanging on a kitchen wall
Two kitchen-specific points. First, adhesive strips bond badly to any surface that has been cleaned with a kitchen degreaser — the residue is exactly what the adhesive cannot grip. Clean with isopropyl alcohol before hanging, as always, but expect kitchen walls to need it more than most.
